186 MPH, 993TT with 400hp : I-280 between San Jose and San Francisco
170 MPH, 996 C4S X51 with 400hp : I-85 between Mountain View and San Jose
Bottomed out at 170 on I-85.
Sudden loud sounds at 170 can change your driving habbits for a long, long time.

While living in Germany many years ago, had a Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 that I had up to an indicated 140mph on a downhill stretch of the autobahn. This was back in the '70's and it really impressed my German friends. Pontiac said the top end on that car was 135mph so maybe I was almost going that fast.

In Porsches my old 1970 911T used to top out around 125mph on the autobahn. All the other Porsches were in the US and I don't think I have ever had any of them over about 120mph. When I travel to Europe now, I usually end up with Audi A4's or equivalent BMW's or Mercedes which all seem to top out in the 120 to 130 range on the autobahn. I did get one of the new Audi TT's on a trip last year and got that up to about 135mph on one stretch of autobahn, but it felt a bit loose at that speed. One of these days I am going to splurge and rent a 911 from Avis. I always see them at the Frankfurt airport location, but they limit the mileage too much on them.

i did 285km/h at an empty highway with my 2003 C4, being followed...at a distance...by a friend with a 986S and further back someone dare to challenge and follow us with a 2006 SLK350. Both Porsche's were fully loaded (two persons with luggages). I must say i was VERY impressed with the stability of the car even at these speeds!!!My previous car was an Audi S3 with many modifications (even Porsche 993 Big-Red brakes, Bilstein PSS9) and i got it up to 265km/h but the C4 is a TOTALLY different experience!!!

Nikos.

Dan, how did the Cab handle at 180? Was she stable? In any event that's fast.

Absolutely stable. Of course, I was pretty busy watching ahead about 4 miles down the road (when hitting a mile every 20 seconds or so...)

In 1978 I got a new 911 Targa up to 145 mph on I-64 West of Richmond,Va.....scared the ______out of me. I was young and stupid!

In 2001 at Porsche Driving School I got up to 146 on the backstretch at Road Atlanta....that wasn't scary because I was on a race track and the 996 was very stable.
