Default Creak from front control arm, ball joint?

Sorry if this has been addressed, I tried a search but didn't find what I was looking for.

Anyway, I'm getting a creaking noise from the right front lower control arm. I'm thinking this is a ball joint going south. If so, how hard is this to replace, can I do just the ball joint or do I have to change out the entire arm? Am going to get it in the air this weekend so would really appreciate some info on this.

The arm must be replaced. The proper ball joint removal tool makes the job much easier.

I just got the parts in and I'm waiting for the tool to come in. I'll let you know how difficult it was once I get done. It doesn't look too bad, but things like that can be deceiving so I'm reserving judgment.

Did you order from Sunset and do you mind sharing cost?

Thanks Doug, darn, was hoping for just the joint.

Yes, I did order from Sunset. It was a little under $300 for each side. The tool I'm picking up for ~$20 from Napa...which is nice in comparison to the list price at the dealer of $200.

Are you getting the fork type separator or something more exotic like the one Doug has pictured above?

This was referenced by someone else on the renntech forum. They used it with no problem.
