Radio code...
Just took mt 99 996 to a local dealer to obtain my radio code. I had removed the radio and had the model and serial #...but the service tech said they needed to plug in to my car computer to get the code....$49.20 and 15 minutes later I now have sound again. He offered to wash it for free, but I declined.

Typically the radio code is written on the options sticker under the hood so service guys have no problems resetting your radio after working on your car. Check your sticker.

In the old days the dealer called a 800 number and got the code over the phone, using the radio serial number. Last time I asked the 800 number still worked but that was a while ago. But now they enter your VIN in their computer and get your codes.
I do not know why they would or said they did, hook your car up to a computer which I guess is a PIWIS. There is a place in the DME to store the radio code but I never see it in the DME. Mine is in the DME because I have a PST2 and put it there myself. If the code was in the DME it might not be right because radios get replaced. A 1999 has the 220 radio and many were replaced under warranty due to the peeling buttons issue.
My dealer does not charge to get the code. Your car does not have to be hooked up to a computer. So much for courtesy.

Once again, another reason that Porsche dealers have such a sterling reputation when it comes to 'hosing' a customer.Guess I should have posted before I went to the stealer! Thanks for the info everyone.

I have gotten mine with a phone call to the dealer. It used to take a radio serial #, but I understand its the VIN, now. This works if you know someone at the dealer who trusts you. The fake, "you must bring the car in" was probably to reassure themselves that you actually had the car, and not just a hot radio. Still, once there, they didn't need to charge you.
