Default grrrr cup holder won't close!

Before I get flamed; yes I use the cup holder but only to hold a cup of coffee for the quick ride from the coffee shop (three blocks) to my office.

Anyone know how to fix it? It's the new style cup holder that sits below the center vents. It closes but won't stay shut. Grrrrrrrr

Cheers,
Stan

Cupholder? We don't need no stinkin' cupholders!

My '99 only has the lap mounted cupholder and the optional passenger-mounted cupholder.

Give you a bump on ideas for your fancy newfangled one.

I wouldn't even dare drive with a cup of coffee, because I know that once I get to my destination I will curse myself since there would be a mess to clean.

You mean to tell me that 996's have cup holders? Jeez, next you are going to try to tell me that they make these cars with an automatic transmossion!

Ha! I just drive with it in my hand. My office is only two blocks away and since I have a hands free phone, I can use the hands to hold the coffee and shift the gears, steering is optional.

Stan,

I am not certain how to remove the cup holder, but it is a self contained unit that I think is just slides out of the dash. I am not sure if you can easily get inside the unit once you get it out of the dash. You might want to send a PM to Riad because if I recall correctly, he installed a radar detector face plate in his cup holder unit.

Let us know how you make out with the fix.

You remove the trim by prying and there are two torx screws holding it in. The unit has a gear, some track and a spring catch. If the plastic spring catch breaks, it is not repairable or replaceable and the whole unit needs to be replaced. The unit can be disassembled once taken out though.

Good info. I wasn't sure about that because I never had to remove mine.

I was always really impressed how Porsche designers would have not just one, but a double cup holder just above the $2800 PCM unit.

The German engineers for our E430 put the cup holders right above the transmission ECU. The MB forums have some owners with bad experiences of spillage that leaks down on the transmission ECU.

I believe the overall gist is (Porsche or not) NEVER DRINK IN THE CAR?
