Default Dealer shining me on regarding engine mounts?

The local dealer is telling me that the engine mounts on my 03 996 need to be replaced soon as they are wearing out (50k miles on the car). Based on a visual inspection, neither I, not a trusted mechanic, are seeing anything. What would the syptoms be of mounts approaching the end of their service life? Anyone else have this done?
Thanks!

The mounts are fluid filled. They wearout/leak and sag. Do a search for "Engine Mount hemorrhage" in this, 996, forum. There are a couple of threads that will give you some good info.

Vibration in the cabin during idle and normally no vibration when driving.

I had to replace a mount on my 986. The rubber was cracking on the mount.

Call Suncoast for part price... but to do the job seems like a few minutes / side. I lowered the motor off the mounts last week. That took only a couple minutes as there is only 1 large nut / side. Then the mount is only 2 bolts /ea. I bet having never dont it before I could swap them out in under 1 beer....

The parts are not super cheap, but it's an easy job (I think) and they do need replacing on some cars. I have read quite a few that needed it.

You can literally pull the mount out and inspect it yourself in about 5 minutes.

I had one that went bad and was causing an idle vibration inside the car that was annoying. When I pulled out the mounts the passenger side mount was clearly startint to collapse and the angel of the main stud for the mount was not correct and was much easier to move around than on the mount that was still good from my car. No really good way to put that I suppose. They don't have to be leaking to be bad.

You can get replacements pretty darn cheap if you look around some on the net.

Please define "pretty darn cheap".

I've recently noticed a new vibration in the rear of the car (almost like the glass is vibrating) and suspect a worn mount.

What is your dealer estimating for this job?

You should also check with a local indy shop, let us know if you need ideas in your area.

~$150 for a pair of new mounts. (aftermarket)

and seriously...they couldn't be easier to replace. All you need is a jack and some common hand tools and both mounts can be done in 15-20 minutes.

Anyone have links handy with a how-to on changing/inspecting the mounts?

Just something to do if I'm feeling bored, and I have a bit (very small) of vibration at idle.

Place a jack under the rear jacking point of the car and only pump it up to apply slight pressure so the engine doesn't move while you have the mounts out. (don't lift the car up)

Unbolt the 3 bolts from the top of the mount in the engine compartment. You may have to take the stock air box out to get better access to them. I have a CAI and did not have to remove it. (13mm I belivee)

Under the car you'll see one large nut where the stud from the mount passes through the sub frame. Ubolt this nut (17mm or 19mm) and the mount should then lift out from the top.
