Okay 996 experts....

Key fob is no longer working either the front trunk nor door locks. Battery is relatively new and no changes to routine with my car. What is the likely culprit? Oh and of course the alarm is no longer triggered by the key either.

This is useful, I have 1 or my keys suffering the same fate.... My guess is the pc board is shot, but I will be watching for ideas too

Try this: Take the battery out of the key fob and reinstall it upside down for about 15 seconds. Remove the battery and install it correctly. See if that "jump starts" the fob.

DO you have a second key fob? Does that one work?

As C4CRNA mentioned, if it's been off 5 days, alarm goes to "sleep" - check your owner's manual for specifics.

No did not get a second fob with the car just the extra key. I will give that a try!

OK that is about as stupid as I have felt in a long time (since breakfast at least)
So I have not used mine in a couple months and should have checked it before trying this rediculous "trick" but after I did it the thing seems to work much better than I remember....

but why.... with the battery upside down both FOB connectors contact the same polarity of the battery...that should have no effect at all...

(though I cannot discount that my FOB seems to be at least working when I thought it was dead)

It de-polarizes the circuit boad.

You can discharge the circuit by simple removing the battery for a few minutes.
I would not recommend inserting the battery backwards, unless specified
by the manufacturer (I never saw a DC circuit that requires that by the manufacturer).

On the other hand, in some instances when inserting the battery backwards,
you may have a fast battery discharge, and/or a hot little battery followed by a little explosion!

one of ours died last fall. pc board had to be replaced . cost (including 19% sales tax) 174 euros. when they change out the pc board they have to change out both and we had to bring in all three keys.

FWIW:
Re-synchronisation:
Switch on ignition with key and valid transponder.
ˇ Switch off ignition.
ˇ Remove ignition key from steering lock.
ˇ Operate transmitter within 6 seconds after the key has been removed.

If the LED on the hand−held transmitter stays dark when the transmitter is operated, this is an indication of either an empty battery or a faulty hand−held transmitter.
Radio transmission is OK if the LED on the transmitter flashes when the transmitter is operated and the alarm readiness lamp on the dashboard flashes rapidly.
