Seriously, I have heard that before but there are just to many people running these and I would imagine as long are you drive correctly there should be no issue. all you are doing is reducing the throw, I don't think you are really shifting that much quicker unless you beat on it and that can easily be done with the stock setup.

Others more educated than I on this can weigh in.
LOL!! Sorry Marc, I didn't realize it would come across like that!

I figure the same as you, when it comes down to it. I mean I can't see how shifting super quick with a stock shifter would be much different than installing an SSK, except that you wouldn't have to work so hard at it.

I might give it a shot. Although my second gear syncro is already shot, so I'm trying to baby it until I can find the $$$ to put in a rebuilt trans. Uggg.

I was gonna install one, but a guy at a very reputable Porsche trans rebuild shop (won't mention who it is, PM me if you want to know), advised that a SSK is not the best thing for the syncros. The reasoning is, the shorter throws are asking the trans to shift quicker, which in turn ask the syncros to match speeds quicker causing accelerated wear.

Thoughts? Don't want to hijack this thread, maybe I'll start another...
That has been written in the PCA website tech section. However:
1. it seems inconsistent with Porsche selling a short-throw shifter kit for the car, and
2. speed of the shift is not necessarily related to the distance.
I have a long-term case of tendonitis in my right shoulder, and the short throw is simply easier for me to use than the standard throw. It's also why I use a track ball and not a mouse on my desktop computer.

Yep, number 1 makes sense.
But for number 2, if you shorten the lever arm, the only way the gears/syncros will be brought together at the same rate is if you shift in the same time as a stock shifter. That is, if it took 250ms to move the stock stick from 1st to 2nd, and you shift the SSK in the same time, sure, it's all the same. But, since the shift distance on the stick is now shorter, you should conceivably be able to now move the stick the shorter distance in a shorter amount of time (albeit physics says you'll need a greater force to do it), thus the gears come together quicker.
Is it enough to make a difference of wearing them out? I'm no expert so I don't know. But if Porsche had the SSKs as an option, I say give it a shot, it can't be that bad.

Best idea then: Make a track-ball shifter!!

Just want to add, last night went for a "spirited" drive. The ssk is the BEST mod I have done to my 996.
Perhaps short of suspension and chipping/bigger Turbo a 951 one of the best mods I have done to any of my P-cars.

I give it the thumbs up, Syncros be damned!

Mine was already installed in a 997 cage so the install was really quick and easy.

Just came back from a drive, I am sold. Feels great and the best part is the "rubbery" feeling is gone. That always annoyed me more than the long throws.

I wish I would have installed this months ago, I missed out.
Marc, good for you! That's ^ why I was giving you so much grief about getting it installed, because I knew you would really like it! Well, that and the fact that I enjoy giving the "good guys" a hard time once in a while!

I installed my 997 shifter today. Removing the center console was easy following the instructions - thanks Toyota!?

I didn't go for a test drive yet, but I did clean and condition all the leather (there's a LOT of leather)! So the next spirited drive will be in soft, comfy supple leather.

I do wish I could swap the driver and passenger seats - I sat in the passenger seat while cleaning the dash, and it's much more supportive and firm! Is there an easy way to swap the padding maybe?
