Default Clutch replacement - Labor

Hello all!

I am heading towards a clutch replacement, so I have a few questions.

I have read that the service manual specifies that it should take 3 hours 50 minutes, but I couldn't find that either in the general or in the manual transmission manual.
Can someone help with that?

Could someone briefly describe what needs to be removed / dropped to replace the clutch?

I also have a leak from my valve covers that I would like to fix and I was told that the engine has to be dropped.
Are the 2 jobs the same labor-wise (i.e. should I be paying double labor) ?

Finally, can anyone recommend a good and reasonably-priced shop in the West LA area (or around)? My first quote from a dealership was $2,500 for parts and labor and that is absurd!

Thanks!
Note I am taking about an '02 996 RWD.

My service advisor (P-car dealer) said one of his techs can have the trans out in an hour.

The trans has to come out for the clutch replacement, not the motor.
The dealer quoted me about $800 just for the clutch kit. It can be had from Sunset Porsche (by calling them and having it delivered to you) for about $500 which includes shipping to most places.

If you brought the clutch kit to an indie you might pay $500 for labor. THis does not include a flywheel. That's another $850 item.

Can't comment on the valve covers. make sure you are not overfilling the oil (if you change your oil or top it off on occasion) as that will contribute to oil being dumped out of crankcase valve that may look like a valve cover gasket leak.

Don't rely on the computer oil level system in the dash, it lies!!!!!

Also make sure it is not a spark plug tube leaking. Much easier fix if it is.

Thank you both!
If the motor comes out, isn't the transmission accessible in order to replace the clutch?

There is not much point to taking out the motor and not the trans.
To do the clutch, the trans comes out. To replace the valve cover gaskets, both the motor and trans would come out together. Then you would split the two, replace the clutch, join them back together, and put them back in as one.

Although not in West Los Angeles I have used TRE Motorsports in Van Nuys and found them to be very helpful and cost effective. David is the owner and the phone number is 818 909 9220. They have done work on my 1991 Targa that I just put up for sale (a bargain!) and the PPI just 2 weeks ago on a 2001 Cab that I just bought.

If it is leaking/seeping, yes. There are a couple of Service Bulletins that should be considered when doing the clutch.
The shop doing the work should advise.

If you were close to me, I'd do the job for you at about $500 for labor. It's a very simple procedure as far as clutches go. Valve 'cover' is not bad either, I do it with the engine in the car...
