Default Remanufactured or new engine?

Where is a good place to rebuild an engine for a 1999 carrera 2 coupe or to buy a new engine?
What is the cost of each one plus installation? Or is there a better option to go with, like a different engine for reliability or power for about the same price?
I'm in Augusta GA, about 2 hours from Atlanta.

Thanks in advance

Suncoast I think I read has the best prices on new and/or reman'd engines. Not sure. Has been discussed here before

Checked last week with Sunset Porsche and the price for a 3.4 remanufacturered engine was $11,795.64 plus core charge which you get back upon turning in your core. Assume shipping of $300-$400 each way and you are approaching $13,000. Suncoast usually has the same price.

Flat 6 has a program of upgraded engines that will be several thousand dollars more, but have big improvements in most areas.

There are also some shops in CA that sell rebuilt engines for $8,000 or so with a 1 year warranty, again they need a core.

As mentioned Jake is nearby, keep in mind that you'll wait a few months to get your engine back in the car (at least this was the case during the summer).

I ordered a new engine from Jim Ellis Porsche in Atlanta. They dropped off the new engine at the shop, and after doing a brief looksee at the old engine to confirm that everything was there, hauled the old one off.

What was spectacular about this exchange was that was the extent of the "core" process. They automatically deducted the core charge from the bill. No waiting to hear if Porsche approved the core or not. That's pretty sweet.

Options..

1. You can get a 3.4l from a junkyard for probably $5-7k depening on mileage, but no warranty.
2. You can buy a Porsche rebuild for $12k ish (FYI I priced one at suncoast recently and they were MORE than the local dealer) with a nice warranty
3. You can buy a Porsche crate motor (if they will ship one) for $30k - I think it is priced that way to steer you to the rebuild
4. You can have Jake build you something, upgrade to 3.6, more HP, more durable, BUT more $ and more time to wait.

I just did a factory reman. in my '99 C4. Engine price was about $12k (core swap done immediately - no waiting), labor was about $1500. However, I also needed a catalytic converter on one side (~$1200) and two new O2 sensors (~$350). The oil/coolant mixture goo corrupted those parts when the engine died and are not included with the reman. engine.

This engine is for sale here on the forum and is the best price on a used engine that I have seen:
