Default Gas cap replacement

I had a P0456 check engine light a couple weeks ago.
I replaced the gas tank cap.

The old one had a very brittle, cracked o ring. What abysmal quality from a Porsche?

Left one is the old one. Hard to tell from the crappy cellphone camera shot.

Anyone have hints as to how to reinstall the strap to the car?

I replaced mine and it's very easy, at least for a 2003. Where the tether is anchored to the chassis, there is a plastic pin in the center of the tether base. Push it through w/ a tiny screwdriver (or, what I had, a dental pick) and be careful not to lose the pin (my new gas cap came w/ a new pin).

After the pin is out, just remove the old base/tether/gas cap, install the new base/tether/gas cap, and install the pin to hold the base in place.

Np, the tether is anchored to the bottom right - let me know if you need a pic to illustrate.

When you re-install the pin, there will be no positive stop so just push it through until it's flush w/ the base.

Good luck.

Old post, but that pics help a lot. The clip shold be inserted to the sheet metal, then the tail of the fuel cap inserted below the sheet metal. Otherwise if the clip is inserted to the tail of the fuel cap then to the sheet metal, the fuel flap spring will interfere as the whole works protrudes too much.

Thanks for the pic!

On another note, is that the correct position for the clip? Or should it be actually on the bottom right, to the hole just very near to the base of the fuel flap mounting?

Thanks for the info. My replacement cap and tether did not come with a new pin. I used a small allen key to push the pin out. The difficult part was getting the fastener back into the hole. I had to wrap a small piece of tape around it to close the prongs (the tape was weak enough to break when the pin was reinstalled. Works great. Thankfully I this thread saved me from making the mistake of drilling out the fastener.
