Yes, CPO would start when purchased. It's cosmetically flawless with only 16k miles (looks like a new car inside and out). If I didn't want the CPO they would of course sell it for about $2k less since it not purchased from PCNA until bought from the dealer. But that's one of the reasons I'm looking at dealers because of the CPO. I can afford a $35k car, but can't chance a $12k motor if it fails (unlikely of course).

How much was the 2002 Targa new - anywhere to find that data?

What Color is it?

$30K is reasonable if it were a private sale. If you really want the car and they CPO a targa (they can have roof issues) I think $32K is the bottom line with CPO. If you get it, drive the Sh*t out of it and use up as much of the 84K miles and 2 years of coverage that you can.
Me like Targas....
Happy Hunting.

I have a full order guide for the 02 Coupe but not the Targa.

It's Seal Gray Metallic. And 13k miles, not 16k like I mentioned. Is the low mileage to be of concern?

13K (or even 16K) miles are a bit low. Could have some latent engine issues that would have already manifest itself if the miles were higher. I would ask if the RMS and IMS have been updated with the latest 997 parts. The CPO offsets the low mileage.

Targas are rare. Sort of cuts both ways: not everybody wants a Targa (too bright, top heavy, obstructed rear view etc.); but some people love the Targa and will pay extra for a good one (panoramic roof, hatch back etc.).

If this was just a Coupe FMV is probably about 30K +/- 1K, but not 36K. The dealer is probably waiting for a buyer who really wants a Targa and will pay a premium for it.

BTW don't think that for peace of mind you must buy from a P car dealer. You can buy a CPO car from a private seller and the balance transfers. Another option is to buy a car with no warranty and budget for a 3rd party warranty sold by your local P car dealer.

the price of the car new has very little bearing on what car is worth now. sounds like a nice car and with cpo you don't have to worry about anything for 2 years. if car is in shop with cpo repairs do they give you a loaner porsche? just curious.

I'm in the situation of emotion taking over reason. The dealer is giving me a reasonable trade offer. Private party is not that interested at this point.

Decisions, decisions....

From what you've said about the car, I'd pay up to $30-31k for it from a private party. If the CPO is important to you, I'd pay an additional $2k for that. If they're giving you an extra $2k for your trade, I'd add that to the price too. That gets us to $34-35k. If you really love the car and they won't go below $36k, what's $1k at this point? If you really like the car, buy it! If it's truly in superb condition, you're not getting a bad deal. I didn't even take into account the "convenience" factor of driving to the dealer in your old car and driving away in your new one!

Good luck!

Pull the trigger, you're very close on price...who can really say other than you if $35k or $36k is the right price? Sounds like a decent deal to me. GL

How much is your trade in going to save you in taxes on the Targa?

The thing to keep in mind is that trading in your old car is fast and convenient and may save you some taxes. You can usually net more $ by not trading in and selling the old car yourself, but depending on the car and given the economy and the holidays and winter, it might take a while to sell it for a high enough price.

I just sold my 2003 with 48K for $30K in a private sale, but mine had more $$ options/mods than yours. If it is CPO'd who cares how low the miles are, and besides in negotiating you will never ever convince any seller that low miles can be a bad thing. I think $34K with CPO is good.
