My parking brake in my new to me 996TT pulls almost vertical before it will hold. I want to try and adjust to 3-4 clicks.
Can you get to the cables without removing console completely? I've got the factory CF unit so I don't want to do any more than required to minimize potential damage to console. Thanks. |

The parking brake uses two drum brakes that are on the inside of the rear brake rotors. There is a typical drum brake adjustment (for the shoes) on each rear rotor. Adjust with a large screwdriver through the hole in the rotor hub (wheel off). Rotate the adjustment until the rotor can not be turned then back off 5 clicks (rotor should turn freely). The parking brake cable is adjusted in the center console by removing the plastic plate in the storage bin. Using two wrenches release the lock nut and then tighten the nuts to adjust the cable. A correct adjustment will NOT actuate the parking until 5th click. Anything may cause the brake shoes to drag and cause premature wear on the parking brake shoes. Don't forget to tighten the lock nut again when your adjustment is complete. |

Yes, you can adjust them without removing the console. There are actually 2 ways you can adjust them: at the handle and at the adjusters on the brake shoes. From the position on your handle, I would strongly recommend that you pull your rear wheels/rotors and check how much surface is left o nthe parking brake shoes. If they are worn down, a new set of shoes should make the handle correct. to adjsut the handle directly, open the storage bin and pull out the rubber piece at the bottom. Remove the single Torx head screw that holds the cover plate. You can now use a wrench to adjust the cable tension. If the cable holder is tiilted to one side, you need to adjust the adjuster on the brake where the cable has slack.

BTW - Porsche knew we might need to adjust certain things and replace some items - so they made it pretty easy to do so.... Those of you that DIY can confirm that although there is often hard to work on parts, there are also many very easy to access items......
Dont be afraid to try the simple jobs (ask if you dont know how as the OP did) but most of these little things are easy to fix yourself....... |

Great information. I'm thinking that the shoes may be worn out beacuse the handle comes so far up. I will try and pull the rear rotors and have a look. Assume what could have worn out parking brake of a 27k mile car would have been failing to release the parking brake.

I found the following DIY for replacing brakes.

Where is the screw located. Don;t think you can see it with the rotor on. Thanks. I'm sure it will be more obvious once I pull off the wheel but it may be next week when the snow melts! Keith |

Well I got the PB adjusted. I thought when the DIY said insert screwdriver through lug nut hole that I would find a screw to turn to tighten/loosen the springs. Turns out it's not a screw head but a knurled **** that you kinda ratchet using the tip of the screwdriver. I turned it counterclockwise to tighten. As instructed, I tightened until the rotor wouldn't turn by hand and then backed off about 5 clicks. Handle now comes up only about 45 degrees to fully hold.
