Default oil weight and blend question

Hi. I'm a new owner to a 996 C2. Previously owned p-cars before, but this is my 1st 911.

I'm looking to do my 1st oil change. I went to the dealer to buy some parts (he charged me $50 for the oil filter and drain plug). I had previously bought 15w50 at Walmart, but then saw posts on this forum that the new recommendation is to use 0w40. I asked the parts guy about finding this weight oil and he gave me a snooty response saying that I can't buy Porsche oil at Walmart. My reply was that it's just oil... oil is oil, right? And he tells me that I have to buy the European blend or my car will smoke.

So having searched the threads, I found no mention of this. Is there a difference between european and north american blend? Also, I notice that Walmart sells 5w40 truck blend - is that okay to use in our cars?

actually, you can by Porsche oil at Walmart, It's just Mobil 1 0w-40 and the oil change is very easy.
Pep boys, Autozone usually stock 0w-40 and you can even buy it on amazon.com
Don't use a truck blend... it's uh.. not a truck

You can get an oil filter and drain plug for under 20 bucks from suncoast.

Thanks. Is there a difference between European blend and North American blend?

Yeah, I know my car is not a truck, but does my car know the difference between truck oil? From the previous threads, I thought the hard part was just choosing which weight

A truck blend may include additives that would help for low rev, high throttle situations for towing, who knows. Whatever the reason it's not the right oil for your car.

As for NA and Euro blend, not sure, but just buy Mobil1 0w-40 as a base.

The European Blend tag is to some extent marketing hype. There is some basis in fact for it: Mainly I think the European Bland refers mainly to Mobil 1 0W-40 oil and specifically to its low "0W-" viscosity classification.

European climate being on average cooler than many places in the USA even during the warmest months the 0W helps ensure the oil flows readily at cooler temperatures.

Porsche approves many oils for use in these cars.

Macster.

Thanks for the clarification.

I'm an American in Canada right now. It's been pretty frustrating trying to get parts. I've been trying to get an oil filter wrench, but no one sells them. The dealer won't even sell them. I guess I'll have to submit to their plan and have them do my oil change this time around because I'd like to change the oil sooner than later.

Thanks again for the help.

Go to Wal-Mart and buy a large strap wrench for $8, that will get the filter right off.

I just picked up a #2 SuperGraphite oil filter wrench at Walmart (the old one I bought at Canadian Tire broke - this also fits my wife's Mercedes). I buy my oil where I can - including Walmart, Canadian Tire (recently got Castrol Syntec on sale for $25 for a 4.4 litre jug) and Partsource. I purchased an L&N spin on filter conversion recently to avoid taking a bath on Canadian Porsche parts. I try to buy stuff from Sunset as much as possible. Typically the Sunset parts are 50% of the cost from our dealers and if you order a few things from them the savings are good even if you factor in the delivery/brokerage fees.
Hang in there baby!

Canadian Tire sells the Mobil 1 'European formula', if that's your choice.

I would definitely stick to a recommended oil. The oil in this engine does a lot more than just lubricate the pistons as they go up and down. Oil is still a cooling medium in the M96, not to mention the valvegear is practically watch-like in its high tolerance fiddly-ness. Not worth improvising for the money you'd save.
