I visited Renegade Hybrids when I was in Vegas last year. I was impressed with their operation and if you truly wanted a good bang for the buck the V8 is the way to go. With that being said though, be ready to really be hated amongst the purists. Not only would you have the bastard child 996 but it would have an American heart it in which would really up the hate level!

You beat me to it. I am on that forum and have been watching that build from the start. I can't wait to see it when it's done. Renegade doesn't offer LSx mounts for the 996, so if you are going to do this it's all custom. Not for the faint.

That RGT-8 Motor is NOT a Cayenne engine. It's also not for sale without buying the car first. If it were, I would be the first in line.

That thread is a great find. I'm going to be interested to see how they handle the DME, immobiliser, multiple engine control computers, PSM etc.

Hahaha sorry about that, credit where credit is due Ed!

What did you think of his U shaped cross member solution? (almost all of the aircooled LSx conversion wind up cutting the rear member under the engine cover to clear the belts)

Best,
Hans

Too bad they probably aren't melding into the 911's electronics. just franken modding the car I'd think. Never read the links though. I gotta wonder about the weight difference + or -. Then the radiator needs.

Funny thing I have noticed about transmissions is the old 64 MBG 1800cc 4 speed to date had the best shifting trans for speed shifting I have ever seen. Beats chevy's with hurst and muncie combo's and any other sports cars. Must of been the direct shifter into the gear box design.

Day dreaming is bad for the mind

LOL I was just being silly... thats some pretty nuts stuff there. Back in my high school days I had a friend who stuck a high performance 327 (Chevy V8) into a Datsun B-210...after a couple months the car litteraly sat on flat pavement with one wheel almost in the air the frame was so twisted... so into a second B-210 it went, and that one nearly killed him when it came apart at speed....

I think some of the engineering is good, some is really good, and some is like asking if you can hold springs compressed with plastic tie wraps

A local shop here has done a few LS6/7 conversions into 928's for local racers and swear they could fit one into a 996. Funny I saw this as I just found the shop the other day and was chatting with them and toured their shop. I could post a pic or two of a 928 they had in the shop with a LS7 in it if someone could teach me how to post pics, ha!

Now you wouldn't want to actually read something before posting about it, might risk being relevant. They absolutely do have to solve the DME / immobiliser issues, you can't start the car or run the gauges or anything without resolving them, and anyone who has built a dedicated track 996 will attest to the major pain that is the 996 DME. According to that guy's thread, he will use the LS1 computer to run the motor and the porsche computer to run everything else, but in modern cars, you can't start them without things like crank position sensors and immobilisers all saying "green". Anyone can shoehorn a motor into a 911, the standard motor is actually huge from a power to weight perspective, but the k challenge, the reason everyone has stuck to using old 911s and 928s, is because of the DME/immobiliser/PSM etc. If he figures it out, which I doubt he will without spending a a stupid amount of money, you're going to see a lot of scrap 996s with chevy motors in them.

As to weight difference, the motors weigh almost exactly the same fully dressed, +/- 20 lbs depending on accessories

Air/Oil cooled conversions have used far less cooling than a stock two radiator 996 (typically a wing mounted radiator set like a 993 turbo S or front mounts, electric water pumps)

yeah this is spot on, engine swaps are half ingenuity, half too much free time, and all crazy, that's what makes them so entertaining. Reading these stories is like reading about a man battling a marlin or a white whale!

I would love to do this with an old 3.2 carrera with a tired/blown engine - less worries pesky electronics to mate with

But the Porsche 'purists' already hate the 996 with or without an american V8 stuffed into it...
