Default WTB Cats for a 2002 996...

I am in need of both catalytic converters for my 2002 Carrerra 4... They of course went bad just after the 8 year inservice date so are not covered by th warranty!
If you have a decent pair of take offs or an aftermarket set for a decent (read cheap!) price, please let me know! Looking for something to get me by for a while until a possible exhaust system upgrade...

Thanks!

I went to my dealer and paid him to install new spark plugs and he agreed to try to call Porsche NA and get them to goodwill the cats - which they did...
Try it. can't hurt

the Dealer here in Houston is the one that told me it would be $2,400+ to replace the 1st one that went bad... after balking at the price the other "went bad" 1.5 months later! Both now return the catalytic effecience code and one has a definite rattle... Had all codes checked and plugs replace last month with my 60k service, all is good except the efficiency code.
Guess I can try, worth a shot, but they didn't offer or seem to be willing to help!

Why buy the OEM cats ? less efficient, more expensive, heavier... right ?

I assume Porsche only sell them for those who are making extended warranty pay for them, which also would explain the silly price. They would charge 10k, I bet they would still sell some !

Actually the OEM converters based on my info/experience are pretty darn good.

They are more expensive but almost certainly contain more the very expensive catalyst metals that do the work.

They are heavier cause they are very well made. Porsche after all has to warranty them for a long (relatively speaking) time and for many miles. Also, the EPA randomly tests used cars for emissions and no automaker wants to fall short in this area. If Porsche used cars were failing to still meet emssions levels all H*ll would break loose.

Many switch to aftermarket converters only to have CEL problems that are I suspect based on the info in the posts mainly due the poor quality of the aftermarket converters. And as for emissions... for those of us that live in areas where smog checks are a way of life forget it. Oh, and this is going to spread to most other states over the next few years so all that are dodging smog checks now are not going to be dodging them for miuch longer.

Now I agree, as someone who's facing replacing one and probably two converters on my 02 Boxster, they are expensive so I'd be tempted to source some from a wrecking yard.

Oh, the converters on my 02 Boxster have lasted over 8 years and 231K miles the one is very close to the end and I am getting tired of a P0430 error code every week or so.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Thanks to all for the posts and advice...

I have looked into some of the aftermarket ones, but a fellow trackday junkie told me I should post on here first as he picked up a needed one for his '03 here for only a few hundred. (after flooding it with coolant when his engine gave up!)
Will try the dismantler if no one has a take off set for a good price...
looking for the least expensive way to go at this point, got my 928 in for a refinish and cash for "toys" is tight!

I dont know Macster..... there are alot of failed cats posted on here...and its not based on any given miles. They fail randomly.... On the other hand, I have not seen any post of any failures with aftermarket cats. The main reason people go with aftermarket is that they are cheaper and consider it an upgrade from stock cats.... when I pulled my cats out and unscrewed the sensors.... debris just started pouring out.

the cels people get from aftermarket cats are the 100 cel one..... IMO, thats asking for trouble.

Just checking to see if you still need OEM cats for your C4. I have a few sets in the shop. P.M. or email Joey@fabspeed.com.
