Default Considering buying this car...opinions ?

Guys,
I have had my 944 Turbo for 8 - 9 years and am really considering this 996.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...r_id=276850665

Does anyone know this car ?
My one concern is that I dont have a garage, how well does Yellow hold
up after years in the sun ?
Any other input would be helpful
Thanks
Andy

I would go a look at it. Photos do leave something to be desired, but the car is well described.

Is the car also in NC? worth driving to go see it in person? If he's the original owner or not, seems to be truthful; mentioning both Pcar mechanics in the area and two PPI's. surprised he's not on RL.

the car has plenty of nice options, and a very good car cover or nice temporary shelter can give you some piece of mind on keeping it outdoors. You may need to put a nice detail, wash and high quality wax to prolong the life of the paint.

Good luck on your quest...

Yeah, Im with Bob.. that color is KICK ***...

The price is abotu right if the car is right. You have some research to do abotu these engines at 100K miles. I love my 996. But a few things you need to look into and research is "IMS" and also tensioner pads.....

Other than that.. Go drive and see what you think!

Color and sunlight.. I use "liquid glass" on all my cars.. I had 2 red cars in the heat of summer if florida... (red usually takes a beating in the heat) and the paint on those cars never faded in the florida heat.. So just protect it well and you will be fine.. However.. This is really the last thing you shoud be worried about. A paint job is cheap compared to what could be hiding under that hood

If you are close by might be worth a drive by. The car looks like it has a good base to mod up.

Thanks for the input.
The owner seems to be a straight shooter and has answered all my emails. I plan to give it a look but I wanted to be educated before I do.
It will be a daily driver and I will end up selling my 951 should I buy it. I'm a competent mechanic and am not afraid if tackling anything that might come up. He said he has had the car for around 30k miles
with no issues so I'm sure a clutch job will be required soon.

Tensioner pads , now thats another story. What is the life expectancy of the pads ?

Hello....,

A few months ago i was also looking for this car but at that time the seller was looking for 20k and i made an offer of $17,500.00...he refused...sure he regret it now....For a car at this mileage i think the offer was good...try it sure you will get it probably lower then that

I finally found my car with only 50K on it for only $15,000.00....that was a real good deal.

The only thing that bugging me at that time was the mileage on it
2 months ago the car was at 100K i do not know if today the car is still at 100K....

The car is looking pretty good though...
Good luck

Robert

I would say tensioner pads are shot... they are cheap ($40/set) but its a big job. Mostly just time and being extra careful - a couple tools you can make (can possitioner and an actuator compressor - very simple)

the clutch .... if you go in there I 100% recommend an IMS upgrade, do the AOS and flywheel, new case bolts and a water pump... you should be set for another 100k miles then..

Be pro-active and dont let it get too far, the time is now, while its running perfect. Get it done and then enjoy the h&ll out of it (figure $1500 for the clutch/flywheel, $600 for IMS, $150 for AOS, $? waterpump, and as stated $200 for the pads (since you will need some small parts, glue ect) Labor for these would run another couple grand, but if you do it you save that. make sure and consider that when making the buy - IMO

Thanks
This gives me a lot of good info. Work is crazy and just doesnt give me the time to wrench on a car.
If I could get it at a lower price and had the time I could drop the engine and take care of all of the above. I know he cant drop the price much so I'll probably pass on it.

IMO that car wont sell to anyone that knows anything about 996's for that price...what I stated above is $5k at a shop to do, add the posability of cam acuators at $900/pop and you are closing in on $7k worth or repairs to oend up in a car with 100k on the motor. that is the problem with the early water cooled cars and is why they are not selling. (sorry guys, I had a 99' and i know it sounds bleek, but it just is what it is.....) IMO you could get a nice 02'/03' and end up better off in the long run though it may cost a bit more to get in to..

Why can't he drop the price? Not sure I understand that. Regardless, if you are interested, I would look over the car in person and if it's anywhere close to what you are wanting, then make an offer (probably worth 15-17 anyway so 20K ain't gonna happen) and make it contingent on a full and clean PPI. Then have a FULL PPI done yourself, not him. There are a few places locally that can do the PPI properly.....and the Porsche dealer in CH in not one of them.

Nice color. Odd that I haven't seen that car around in all the years I have been active in the PCA in this area.

There are MANY of us local to this car that can help if you needed ANYTHING!
