The rear end noise is driving me crazy. I'm 90% sure that it's tires...but I want to be sure.

I want to put a hydraulic jack under the back of the car and lift the rear end in the air and spin the wheels.

I want to look for wheel play and any sort of resistance.

I don't want to put the jack in a place that will harm the engine or trans.

Where do I put it? Any pix would be appreciated.

The weather is finally above freezing here today so I want to check it out today.

is this car 4 wheel drive???
You cant do that.
If you are planning on putting one jack under the center , you cant do that. It wont work.
if its 2 wheel drive you need to jack both sides and put jack stands under both rear sides.

That's why I'm asking thank you.

It's a 2 wheel drive car. I can jack up each side seperately and use jack stands.

Where do I put the jack? Where do I put the jack stands?

I don't want to damage anything?

You really don't need to lift it up. If its the tires as you suspect can't you feel the amount of tread you have?Are you down to the wear bars? My rears get really noisy at the end of the Summer. Go through a set of rears each Summer (March to November)..

Do you see a solid block of metal behind the oil pan? Use that as a jack point to get the wheels off the ground. The car has 2 jack points on each side of the car (driver / passenger). Feel under the sills and you can feel a round hole. One behind the front tire and one in front of the rear tire. Use the stands at the rear location.

There are a few threads about this subject with pics. Do a search "jack up" and you will find a few. There is a solid cross member (you cannot miss it) behind the oil pan you will use to lift the entire rear of the car to place the jack stands. Sorry I don't know how to do the link feature for another thread. GL

This is one of many "how too" posts. It will show you where the 4 jack points are located (2 per side). You can use the front jack point lift the entire side of the car then slide a jack stand under the rear jack point. Repeat on the other side.

"Wear bars" are the rubber strips between the treads, running across the tire (side to side). When the tire tread wears down to near the "wear bars" it is time to replace the tires.

Get a piece of 2x12 about 12" long and put it on top of the jack. Then you can put the jack under the oil pan and it will spread the weight out to the edges when you jack the car up. I have done this more times than I can count on my car without any damage.

Jacking from the engine does put pressure on the engines mounts which some say can lead to the mounts failing.

I have to admit Doug, I'm a little surprised

personally I always jacked by the cross member - in order to reach it I would back onto some staggered wood planks or side jack at rear jack point high enough to get my other jack into the cross member...

several reasons I dont like jacking by the motor, but many people have done it many times......

Here are the wear bars, I would suffice it to say, I need new rear tires.

Is this the cross member you're referring to?

I think I'm too fraidy scared to jack up the car by the rear.

I think after looking at these wear bars, my noise is 100% tires.

Yeah and they are noisey ***** f'ers.

They are BF Goodrich g-force. The tire rack survey says that they tend to be loud anyway.

The fronts are in great shape.

Do I just get two rears (which tend to be noisey) or should I get 4 Sumi's or Hankooks?
