I was just quoted $1200 to do just the front pads & rotors (w/ labor and all the bits, like new bolts) by an independent. Seems high, even if I'm in NorCal.

Pls reply with what you paid and what you got (and if you don't mind, what city / state you're in).

I did my own but if I remember correct the front rotors / pads were about $450. labor is about 2 hours tops. Did your indy include a fluid bleed, brake pad sensors? Seems pricey.

IIRC done correctly the quote is high and based on replacing everything... you might end up lower if thiings like the rotors are good. $1200 still seems steep but I dont see prices very often...

Yea, that is full retail prices. You can do waaaaay better. Typically 1200 gets close to covering the full front and rear pads/rotors.

Squeel pads add $100, and wear sensors maybe another $100.

That's $850. Taxes add 10% that's $950.

Fluid flush??? That's $200 for one hour labour and a litre of good fluid. There's your $1150.

I've never had my Boxster's brakes done at a dealer but I have asked for a quote several times and roughly it is $1000 per axle. And the latest quote is several years old or older so it can only be higher now.

I have done my Boxster's brakes myself more times than I can remember and I do not remember the cost exactly.

But the cost is essentially the cost of parts: pads, rotors (if necessary); new brake hardware (retainer pin, spring clip, retaining spring, new caliper bolts if I replace the rotors); new wear sensors, and even new philips head flat head screws to hold the rotors on when the wheels are removed).

Roughly, and this too is woefully out of date, but roughly my parts cost is $300 per axle.

Now I buy from a local dealer's parts department rather than buying from one of the Porsche parts discounters. I did this once and received the wrong rotors and had to send them back. I had no problem but I have since just decided to buy the parts locally so if they're wrong I can take them back right now rather than having to deal with getting a return authorization and boxing the things up etc.

As long as the brakes are just worn doing a brake job on these cars isn't that hard. If you need some pointers get yourself invited to a group DIY tech session that some members throw/hold every once in a while during which brakes are done.

I did all 4 brakes (rotors, pads, all hardware) and all the parts added up to $1300 tax incl for a C4S. Labor was 4 hrs but no cost since I did everything myself.

I looked up the parts options and prices and (I happened to be on the Pelican site) I see many brake pad and rotor manufacturers that range widely in price.

I don't have to go Porsche OEM. I'm not tracking the car. I drive in suburbia. I'm fine with "cheap" on price but I don't want to go "cheap" on quality. Anyone have experience with any of these brands I saw...

When I did my front brakes last December I bought a set of Sebro discs at PartsGeek.com for $183.83 (had a 10% discount coupon) and a set of Mintex pads for $31.42 at Europartsdirects.com. Got the 4 caliper bolts from the dealer for $4.09@. Brake Fluid at the autoparts store. I had sensors (you usually don't have to replace these) and hardware that I had bought on eBay.

A good mechanic can do both fronts in less than 2 hrs., probably less than 1, it is a very simple job. To flush and bleed the brakes add another hour.

If they are charging $1,200 they are probably making $600+ in profit.

I just bought the Textar pads for all around and Balo coated rear rotors for my 2000 C2 Cab. I'll be installing them in the next week. Textar pads were what the dealer had installed for the PO. Balo rotors look good. I can let you know what I think after I get them installed. Bought them all from Pelican.

there's a great video on youtube if you search it on step by step how to do your brakes, should take you maybe an hour to do all 4 corners (pads and rotors).
