Talking Protective Film in trunklid.

I was wondering if anyone out there had a part number for this transparent piece of adhesive tape that goes under the hood of the 996 trunk. I've look at multiple Illustrated Parts Breakdown data bases and can't seem to even find a reference for the item. Just wondering if anyone in the RL realm had a part number or info as to where to procure a replacement on this one. There is two pieces installed under the trunk lid and they appear similar in construction to protective film part number 99653723700 which is found on the rear quarter panel pillar to protect the door from scrapping on the car body. Thanks.

Just got the picture up. Groovzilla, it looks like it's there to protect the black Cowl Panel Cover on either side.

I've always removed that from my cars, since it looks like yours - half peeled off. It's to prevent scuffing from the rubber bumper below it on the chassis.

If you're adamant about replacing it, you can pick up some "helicopter tape", just beware that a roll of that stuff is $$$. Or you could track down some 3M adhesive clear protective wrap and cut it to size.

i'm sure you could easily swap out that product they use for something that adheres much better thus looking the part too. something like a thin rubber(maybe in grey) which would fold along the edge nicely and using rubber cement to bond - Rubber cement is easily removed if the time comes. No joke I have an old rubber inflatable grey dolphin my kids used in pool - would be a perfect material. Too bad my wife's a pack rat or I'd send it to you today

Cool deal I will look into that helicopter tape by 3M. The though had crossed my mind since I work in the aerospace industry and we have a grey colored material that is similar to the tape except its called leading edge tape and it does protect leading edges of flight surfaces against damage. Good enough for a plane then good enough for a 996 thanks for the tip Function-First.

I believe the tape is from Patco and you can find it on amazon or ebay for less $$

I think 3M "helicopter tape" is actually sold as leading edge tape, but it isn't gray - it is clear. Maybe they make both?

If you go to a motorcycle shop that sells Motocross stuff, you will find clear numberplate film. This stuff is thick, tough and extremely sticky. When installed on a nice clear surface it is good for years. Cheap too. Just cut to size.

Wonder if that is a form of "packaging" that Porsche puts on to protect the paint during assembly and shipping?

I would go to a detailing shop that installs 3M clear film on cars and have them cut a small piece for you and put it on. I had a spot on the rear doors of my sedan where there was plastic-to-painted-surface contact inside the door jamb and a local detailing shop did that for me.
