Default Track tires - Width issue?

I'm looking to replace my current tires at some point in the next year with some more track oriented tires ( Hankook, Toyo's, , etc) I have Sport Designs wheels with 285/30 -18 and 225/40-18 Sumitomos now. It seems to me that this set up is more prone to understeer then the stock 265/225 set up. I don't tknow if I can get wider tires in the front to fit( i.e. 235 or 245).

So it the better set up 265/225 for the track?

I have 235 and 295's on 18 turbo twists. You be fine running the cuurent sizes you have. I really don't think you notice understeer or oversteer unless you are driving club races.

Thanks that is good to know. I think for my first set i'm go to try the Hankook R-S3
Looks like I will have to run 245/40-18 and 285/35-18 if I want those tires.

225/285 should be fine

265 is the rear makes the rear end very loose. If you used to it then switching to 285's it'll feel like having a little more rear end grip. To you it may feel like understeer but you just arn't going fast enough yet or not trail braking.
265's and I am sideways coming into the corner and then straighten it out as I power out. Fun but slower.

235 up front is very common, and does help to get some understeer out.

I was going to go as wide as 245 as suggested. But I think I will try 235/40-18 first with the 285/39-18.

The wider you can get in there is what helps these cars most. I''ve run as wide as 265's up front.....

Just make sure that your tire to suspension clearance is good with your specific wheel/tire combo. When I changed to 997 wheels I had less clearance up front and ended up having to go down to 225. Now that I've changed out the suspension I have much more clearance and could easily increase the front width.

PS--This also assumes that you can mount these wider tires on your wheels. There are physical limits during the mounting process and you'll reach a limit where you get less traction for a wider tire if your wheel width isn't a good match.
