Default catalytic converter, lemons to lemon-aid?

Today started out a little crappy, long story short I found out I need a new catalytic converter. The Porsche OEM part is around $2300 per side (och) but I only need one, for now. Now i'm trying to look on the bright side by using this as a push to upgrade the exhaust, cats and mufflers.

I'm looking at Fabspeed right now, are there other options I should be looking at? Does anybody have a setup in their garage they want to sell? I have a 2002, 996, C2 cab if that matters.

In talking to my service tech he said the old cats could be worth a few hundred each in salvage, is that true? If so what should I except to get for them?

Thanks

interesting question about how much they are worth when 'broken'...
I assume the 'cartridge' in them can be fixed

I also have a broken one and a good one. I upgraded for the high flow cats, better sound anyways

i was all about replacing the cats before learning of CA and the great state-evil empire's BS not allowing anything not having a C.A.R.B. stamp on it. (which no after market company is doing that i can find) i have seen several cats, left & right OEM on EBAY for 2-$300 a piece that were for a 996. That fabspeed x-pipe is hot, too bad i can't use it. I found another x-pipe made in Germany that was supposedly 200 cells instead of the 300/400 cells in the stock for $1k, same BS...can't use it either. Keep looking u will find different cats. good luck!

There are CARB catalytic converters. Did a search on California's Air resources board and they have a database for Porsche 3.6 converters. I haven't called the manufacturer but it's a start. What I wonder if this can fall under financial struggle and get some $ from the state or some kind of exemption. Since ive gone through5 sets, I rather investigate this route.

Original Porsche cats are worth up to a couple hundred dollars each at metal salvage yards. They have a high content of precious metals. I have sold several 944's cats from dismantled cars for very good money.

Here's some used cats for sale locally. You can do the swap yourself in the driveway in literally half an hour with regular hand tools.

I saw that, it's just a crap shot as too weather they work and if so for how long? It still blows my mind that the OEM part is $2000+.

I've been flirting with the idea of going to fabspeed mufflers, this would just force me to go with their cats too.

It's a good excuse to go with a high-flow setup. Our emissions are easy here in Washington, so no need to worry about that aspect. As long as you don't have a CEL you pass.

The OEM cats for our cars are $1230 each if you know where to look.

Go with the 200 cell cats from either cargraphic, FVD or Fabspeed. You will thank me when you hear them.

Does that mean the Fab speed ones do? My Indy shop looked into the AWE but they said it's an 8 week wait.
