Default Instrument Cluster Repairable?

Hi guys,

My speedo, battery voltage and Rpm meters are gone. All the other meters are functioning fine.

It all happened when I wanted to replace the bulb that illuminates the oil pressure gauge. I right my car to my friend's workshop thinking that it was a simple job. The mechanics didn't disconnect the battery before performing this job. They disconnected the wiring for the cluster and removed the cluster. Took the cluster out and fiddled with it trying to get it open. Finally they did get it open and changed the bulb. Put back the cluster and my rpm, speedo and battery voltage meters were not functioning.

Anyone has any idea on what may have gone wrong?

Cheers

Check the connectors again and see if they were properly plugged in.

You might try to find a Porsche mechanic to look at it. They probably just connected something wrong. It sounds like they have never worked on a Porsche before.

First check all the fuses. It might be something really simple.

Disconnect the battery always before you unplug the instrument cluster. You can try to unplug it again with the battery disconnected. Make sure the 3 jacks are seated correctly with the lock all the way up until they click. Re-connect the battery and see if it reboots.

The needle drive motors are very fragile. If all connections are good then the mechanic may have damaged them. I know of no one who can repair the instruments gauges themselves however, the digital portion can be replaced. From what I am told VDO does sell repair parts to the 996/997 clusters.

Call North Hollwood Speedometer and see if they can help you out.

They work on most instruments from Porsche, BMW and Mercedes...

Thanks guys for all your input. Unfortunately, it seems that the cluster is a gonna. Ordering a used one from germany.

How easy or difficult is it to replace a cluster? What is there involved?

Cheers

It's simple.

Drop me an sms with your email and I'll send you the instructions.

Having said that I find it hard to believe that they all went out after your "friend" changed the bulb.
