No matter what you do ensure that any and ALL broken pieces of impeller are located before putting the car back into service. Not doing this is a pretty good way to cost yourself several thousand dollars later.

How can you ever know if all the pieces are located?

Match the broken pieces that are found with the pieces missing from the impeller. Most of these end up in the cross flow console on the 4/6 bank of the engine and can require partial disassembly to remove them.

Most every terminally ill 996 or Boxster that we see that has arrived due to an intermix issue has a fresh water pump on it and was installed after the prior pump failed and has been installed by someone that doesn't think about the negative issues related to foreign object debris floating around in the cooling system.

See the August 2012 edition of Excellence Magazine in the Tech Forum section for a full article on the reasons why this is a big deal. I contributed the pics and some other info for that article and its spot on accurate.

I sure hope my pump is in tack once I pull it off otherwise it may be time to send her away.

Anyone know what is different? Will this fit a 996?

Thanks!
I have a 996.106.101 pump on my project car ('99 996). It was on there when I bought it. So it works on a '99 for sure.

Is it more likely that the failed pumps caused severe over heating and that caused the intermix (cracked heads, etc), than a lodged impeller piece (localized hot spot)?

I just had mine done at the Porsche dealer...........parts, fluid, and labor.....minus PCCA discount.......$907

Just to throw the numbers out there for what my dealer charged me. I knew it was going to be done right also. Used to go to an indy, had very bad luck with our BMW and Audi there. Dealer works great for me in my situation where I live.

My water pump went recently. Dealer invoice to replace it was just under $1200 (in FL they charge sales tax on the labour as well as parts). I paid nothing however. It was completely covered by my extended warranty...you know, the one certain buffoons insist is a scam that only stupid people would buy

$4600 for 6 years, bumper-to-bumper "exclusionary" not named-item (equivalent to Fedelity Platinum except with no 50,000-mile limit on items that fail from "normal wear"). So far it has reimbursed me $2600 and it still has another 4 1/2 years to go. Given the car is 7 years old now, I have no doubt it will at least break even and most likely more. Every extended warranty I've ever had has done that, sometimes double. So basically for zero net cost I will be covered until the car is 12 yrs old in case of a catastrophic failure like IMS or scored cylindre or such.

Who wrote the warranty? When I got my car 2.5 years ago called everyone I could find and none of them would touch a 2004 996 at any price?

I think Palmbeacher was lucky. As these cars get beyond 10 years old no one will warranty them.

Same here, even NAC which covers my Mercedes don't write warranties for Porsche in Florida.

BTW I see a warranty not as what I can get out of it but as a insurance,I also don't hope that my house burns down because I pay a premium

Mine's an early MY05 but I bought the warranty 1,5 years ago, so, same difference I suppose. The dealer offered me a Fidelity Platinum at that time, so I'm surprised you couldn't get one on your '04 a year earlier. That said, you might not have wanted it, as the one they offered me was $8600 I ended up with a similar warranty called Tech Choice Ultra which cost "only" $4600.
