What is this for?
Guys...there is a part on my recently purchased 1999 996 C4 that I don't understand, what it is and it's purpose. It is a black piece of plastic that sits on the transmission hump just behind the front seats, is about 4-5 inches in size somewhat squarish with prongs jutting up in places. If no one can identify with this description I'll try to get a pic up later.

I think its a place to put your bag of pot if you live in Colorado.

I think it must be the bracket for the old Transmutationalmutater Phase Syncronizer (TPS) that was part of the transmission controls mentioned here @ 32 seconds.
The older Turbo encabulators still had them.

Here is a modified one with the new larger IMS bearing. See ~1:47 listen ~ 2:20

I have a 99 c2 cab and just behind the lift up compartment is carpeting. Nothing like what you have there. Has your car been tracked where that could be used for something. God only knows what though. Belts, or fire extinguisher? Its plastic so not roll bars...let us know if you discover what it is..

Well, now that the picture is posted, it is not so much what you HAVE, it is more what you DON'T HAVE. The thing you are looking at is just the rear of the plastic molding for the center console. What you DON'T HAVE is the TRIM COVER that goes over that section of the console. On my '99 C2 it is a smooth and slightly curved snap-on (into those very same slots) cover that matches the center console lid fabric.
That section of the console is just a visual filler piece to meet the console to the carpeted section between the rear seats. You can see this because the sides of the console continue past the rear for the lid. And the "drop" matches the depth and width of the console lid and fabric forward of this section.
It may have been damaged by a previous owner and removed, kicked off by a back seat passenger trying to get in or out from back there (look carefully under the front seats, it may be hiding under one of them), or was taken out for some other reason, but not replaced.
