Sorry about your troubles. But it does sound like an alternator problem and this is a DIY item if you are a little bit mechanical. The oil leak is a bit scary but if it is not a puddle think positive clean it up and see where it is coming from could be very simple like a spark plug tube cracked or just a tube seal. Cheer up the car looks great but may have been just a tad neglected.

No spark plug tubes in the MII engine. But you're right, really depends on where the oil leak is coming from. I have a tiny slow sweat of oil from the 2 sensors bolted between the spark plugs n the drivers side. Once every months of so, I wipe it of with a paper towel. Normally, though, if everything is right, no leaks.

Alternator is an easy fix, I replaced my alternator about a month ago and it took about 20 minutes.
Here is a link that will help Alternator repair/replacement

Welcome to Porsche ownership!
I was kidding. The last guy mentioned oil leaks and I was acting like he was saying my car had leaks. lol. Bad joke. I know. LOL

Thanks man! I have to say I'm glad to know we have such a great community behind our cars! We NEED that because from what I hear Porsche is not exacly on our side. They are too busy looking at the numbers. With such expensive cars to fix (potentially), it's critical to learn the cars and be self sufficient. I think it's people like you guys that make owning these cars not 100%, just maybe 50%! LOL

I'm only HALF mad!! Woohoo!

I will say this:

1) CAN'T wait to be up and running again, to enjoy the car on the rode more!! A Porsche passed me yesturday(recognized throttle blip first) and I felt almost like when a pretty woman I don't know smiles at me(wait..WHAT does THAT feel like again??).

2) One reason even if minor, why I got the 996 is modern cars are gong away from me. Even purist Lotus is giving in. Too much tech. I feel like I'm being shut out of that intimate experience of knowing and working on your cars. However...althought the car had a metal engine(unlike the modern day "plastic" egines)...it's CRAMPED in there!! Is it really DIY friendly? I feel like I won't be able to get at anything! lol

3) And finally, can't wait to drive her again!!! Did I say that before? That I can't wait to drive her again? Maybe I did say I can't wait to drive her again. OK. That is all.

Oh..took this photo this morning! https://rennlist.com/forums/customav...ar28646_11.gif

As for your issues, neither sound abnormal for any car with some age. Alternators/VR's wear out eventually. They are VERY easy to replace, as are almost ALL of the components of these cars (the 996 is very DIY friendly). Along the way, you will become intimately familiar with the workings of your beauty.

During the 7 years and 105,000 miles that I've driven my 996 as a daily driver, I've been VERY happy with the car's overall reliability. I've had to replace various wear items over time, and I've actually gone through the exact same scenario you describe with your car. Pain in the butt, but easily fixable.

Renntech is an excellent DIY website/resource that details most DIY tasks: http://www.renntech.org/forums/forum...6-carrera-diy/

This website also has quite a few DIY writeups if you search around.

Oil leaks are not uncommon and do not mean certain major trouble. Oil can leak from the spark plug tubes as the O-rings age (easy to replace), for example.

Upload some pictures for us.

If the dealer did an engine detail and got the alternator too wet, it could have been the cause of the failure.

OK, this can go two ways...possibly. It could be alternator or voltage rectifier. How can you tell which one? Remember:

-Voltage spike to 16V

-Then hovers just under 12V

-Then alarms go off

-Then voltage drops to about 11.5

-Then radio starts failing and heat(I cut all that off)

-Then it get's to 11V and the voltage drop accelerates rapidly

-Then engine power cuts in and out sporatically

-Then engine dies for good.

-Fully charged new 12.56V battery shows 11.5 shortly after starting engine and revving does nothing to affect voltage

-Temperature has no effect that I can see. 1st thing in morning next day, no errors seen yet, but voltage is ~11.8. Only lasted 10 minutes this time though. 7 minutes in, voltage was droping fast. No errors or sympton though. Strange. Then it his 10V for a bit...2 minutes later it was done. I think charging system was still somewhat funtional last time. This time it was next to dead which mean 100% load on battery.

sounds like a VR

so many people buy a new alternator and they are quite pricey - even a used/rebuilt one is a fair chunk of change and I am ....well...frugal!

I took mine to a rebuilder and tolf they guy to "spare no expense" "buy/use only the best parts you can get"

cost me less than $70 - that was 2 years ago
there is always another way to do things - for me it was worth a try and paid off so far

When the alternator in my 73 Charger failed it first spiked off the gauge and melted its wires. Then once the wires burnt nothing.
Maybe your alternator had some sort of internal short. I would go over the wires going to the alternator and make sure they are still in good condition.

Either you cant read or you are very dense.
#1. Why didnt you immediately call dealer if it did this 30 minutes after you drove away? Any reputable dealer would have helped. Now who knows?

Dealer. Most have some sort of a 5 day/300 mile warranty. If they blow you off it would very surprising... Especially if it a Porsche dealer.

Check with your dealer they should at least help with the expenses, stuff happens even a thorough PPI can't pick up everything. You just got off to a rough start, get it fixed and get on with enjoying the car.

I think you are pulling our plonkers. Now you see oil dripping under the engine? Come off it mate. You mean to say you only just noticed oil dripping after a PPI. Load of bollux. Take it back and kick some serious *** about this so called PPI. Don't forget to mention all the other crap you say is happening with it in the first half an hour of you driving it. I need to smash my head against a wall again. I can't believe what I am reading..
