Default 2003 996tt OR 2006 997 C4S?

That is the question.. I have located a pristine 2003 996tt with 40k miles, 6spd, nice exhaust, full maintennence records for $40k, and also a 2006 C4S Coupe with 50k for around $38k... which one to buy? Hear both are fairly reliable, prefer the looks of 997 but cant afford the 997tt!

IMHO, the 996tt all the way. Much better engine.

That's a great price, almost unheard of for the Turbo. Snap it up, don't look back. IMHO the Turbo is the best of the best that Porsche produces for a street car, with the GT3 the best street legal track tool. Both share the same basic bulletproof motor which is almost nothing like the M96.

No question on that if PPI checks out on Turbo. TTs are reliable and less issues (no IMS etc).

I've spotted an '01 996tt with 44k miles up for $39k at the local lot. So I'd say the price for the turbo is about right, but nothing special. I'm considering trading up myself, I'm just nervous about higher milage turbos used as a daily whip.

I'd choose the Turbo as well.

That's kind of ironic.... Nervous about a 40k mile turbo while owning a M96?? The turbos are bullet proof and will easily go deep 6 figures..

Of course maintenance history is important which the OPs find has and most auction rats sitting on crappy lots absolutely do not. That's a massive difference.

Assuming clean PPI and a genuine set of comprehensive records (and no extensive accident history) the OP absolutely found a great deal.

Picked her up today, was able to get a fair bit off asking price (40k)

Doctor owned for 8 years, she is awesome!

Well that is certainly Rennlist groupthink, I simply question whether there is any actual data to support this assumption. My concern however is not over engine reliability per se but rather general maintenance costs (brakes, clutch, stuff, etc.) on running an older turbo as a daily driver. All Rennlist idiocy aside, the 996 NA is a wondrously reliable vehicle. The NHTSB and TUV data support this, as does my own personal experience. I have not yet found enough data on the turbos to make an informed statement. I suspect that the guys who run these things hard pay for the privilege, but I suppose there's only one way to find out ...

The TT engine is fantastic compared to the NA M96 or the newer NA. Should even hold its value much better unless the NA M96 hysteria bleeds over to the TT models.
