Cab owners - how much rattle?
Drove an 02 cab today with 55k miles on it. Definite rattle from driver side door or rear. Could have been the windows. Driver window had definite wobble when door was closed and top was down.
What's normal in these? I have no baseline since the only other I've driven was the coupe.

I have a 99 cab and no rattles from any part of the car. Roof up or down.
From your later posting it could mean gear selector on the way out or even a reconditioned gearbox needed. Around $5000. I had to have a reconditioned one put in mine. OK as I was covered via an extended warranty.

No wind deflector installed.
Good to know about yours Hurdigurdiman.
I also found third gear hard to select - kept wanting to go to a place between third and fifth.

Also no rattle on my 2000 Cab. I did have a rattle once and it turned out to be where the cab top connects to the windshield frame on the passenger side. There are allen screws under a plastic tab that hold the sun visor on and also the part that the roof latches onto. I quick tightening of the screws solved the rattle.

Rattles aren't normal. There is always a reason.
However, finding the cause usually involves several weeks of pushing, pulling, screwing, adjusting and head banging, which is useless because you will eventually find the source of the rattle by pure accident...or it will just disappear all on its own.

I got to throw this out. Two loud rattles I was certain was the car:
1. Baby bottle under drivers seat
2. Remote control on visor
First check if all of your additions to the car, however small, are not vibrating. This car is so tight that anything not stock could be the offender.

Thanks all. My guess is that there's something loose in the door or quarter panel, possibly related to the windows. Given the high asking price for this particular example, lack of service history and strange shifting behavior, I will pass.

My 04 C4S cab with 66,500 on the clock has a rattle in the driver's door---sound like the window or maybe the latch mechanism. Haven't taken the time to really investigate. Seems more pronounced when the windows are down, which is usually also when the top is down.

my 02 had rattles when it was 15k mi when i got it. after about 2 years and 4 dealer trips later, all rattles were gone.
most 996 cabs rattle a little, especially those that are parked outside or have higher mileage. the top has plastic pieces that can warp under sun and mechanisms often need cleaning, padding and lubrication.
the example you tested is probably worse than normal. i would not buy a car that rattles too much because it really takes the joy out of it. troubleshooting is a PITA.
997 is more rattle free btw. not sure if it's because they are newer or what.
