Hard to find another car that does everything so well...
Drove about 40 miles north of Seattle yesterday to look at a car from the 60's.
Drove 70-75 the whole way with a computer readout of 29mph for the hwy. Going down a long, but slight incline, showed 34mpg at a gps 78mph/80mph indicated.
I just don't know of another car that gives the power, cornering, ride and reasonable economy as Porsche. The 997/991 may be newer and have good features, but they are incremental. If I simply look at performance (and not the cool factor of just owning a newer car), purchasing one just doesn't pencil out.
Happy to keep driving mine.

996 and C5 Z06 are the best daily driven sports car bargains on the market right now. Both cars can go to the racetrack on Saturday and hit 160+ MPH on the straights, then they can drive home getting 25+ MPG.
The issue I had with the Z06 is the cheapness of the materials and interior. 996 feels much more solid and enjoyable inside, I love how my carrera smells inside; Z06 smelled like a cheap rental cavalier. Z06 vette has the N/A 996 beat in the straight line, but that is about it in my view.

"poor mans supercar." I have the window sticker for my car in a file at home. In 2004 I would have spent over 86K to purchase it. Instead, I waited 9 years and paid 26K for the same performance. I could go out and finance a 13 or wait a few months for a 14, and spend well in excess of 100K. But I would have to factor in the cost of a divorce as well. So the "poor man's" approach suits me fine.

It's nice to read a thread like this, not just all IMS gloom and doom! Since I bought my 99, I never want to drive my "other" car. I never thought this car would be such a fantastic combination of sports car / practicality. Drive it hard, drive it slow, it's just simply a pleasure, with looks to boot! It's the first car I've ever owned that I don't see the point in selling!!

You think your C5 build quality sucks? My C4 has you beat.
Does the C5 have the same half-metric, half-standard mess under the hood as the C4, or did Chevy standardize on one?
