Missing engine number
#16
There is a top of a P on the left side but the rest of the numbers looks like it was sand blasted at some point. Someone was in there and did this on purpose. If you keep digging, might not like the answer at the end. I would stop and pretend I never looked in the first place.

Looking at the option codes it's a no but no discernible engine number you never know. At least I have a couple of additional things to check now.

I didn't say grey import. Actually it was a legit import. Sold and serviced by porsche Japan. If you walk around the porsche showroom in Tokyo you will see all are left hand drive in a right hand drive market.
After plenty of google research it seems the numbers are lightly engraved not heavily stamped. Maybe the Nebraska became victims to previous reveal techniques.
I was only interested in finding out if its the original engine or a replacement. Ill try the pencil if nothing shows then ill give up.
Cheers everyone.

If it matters at all you might want to edit one of your posts from your intro thread. You definitely said it was grey import in that thread but maybe you missed the word "not" in your sentence by mistake. I'm guessing so based on what you said in this post and thread about the prevalence of left hand drive Porsches in Japan.
Jut checked the engine. Definitely black plastic.

Number should look something like this. Without the "AT" which factory = remanufactured.

Tried again tonight with some tricky side lighting. Rubbed pencil in and rubbed off. Not sure it helped but seems I have an engine number.
Can't read it properly but it's there.

Maybe you can try this to confirm:
"When I asked Ric Knab (rknab@sunsetautogroup.com) of Suncoast Porsche, Sarasota Florida to run a VIN # decorder on my 2006 Carrera he came back with all the options listed including the brand of tires. It also included Engine Type # M9605 , the Engine serial # 69606039, Gearbox type G9701 & the Transmission serial # 1030894. It will surprise you with the information that he provides."
