I did breakdown on a summer road trip around Europe and was about 980 miles from home. I stopped for a photo opportunity and the car wouldn't start again, luckily I called the cavalry and we diagnosed it to be the battery earth to body cable corroded and had fell away from the connector. Bolted the copper strands straight to the body and carried on.
It didn't ruin the trip at all, and luckily it was a minor issue.

Last year I was returning from California, via Las Vegas West bound on 40 at 7:00 AM, a beautiful sunrise, life was good, then I saw the red temp light come on. Pulled over in the middle of nowhere, open the engine lid, no fan belt… Weak telephone reception, finally called 911, they put me in touch with a tow truck operation. They asked where I was, I didn't have a clue, then they asked if there was a mile marker sign, sure enough not more than a 100 feet behind me was the mile marker sign. I was 12 miles West of Winslow, AZ.

In less than an hour a young man with a fairly new flat bed pulled up, he blocked up the front wheels so the front spoiler wouldn't be damaged, took me and the car to the local Chrysler dealer. He said if anyone could fix the car they were my best shot. Long story shot, the mechanic at the Chrysler dealer couldn't wait to get his hands on the car. Within 15 minutes he came to the waiting room and said that the idler pulley mounting bolt had backed out. They overnighted the bolt and pulley, the fan belt was still good and I was on my way by 10:00 AM the next morning. The flat bed charges were $86.00, When I got home I wrote and thanked Dalton Motors for their care and fairness. Just a little hiccup on otherwise a great road trip.

I didnt even no we had a fan belt on the 996. Learn something everyday. Glad you got it fixed.

It's behind the Johnson rod. You have to remove the kuneutson valve float and the Fetzer valve, which makes it a PITA to work on.
