Default My 996 engine project thread

In case anyone is looking for information on repairing the 3.4L engine. Below is the link to my adventure. I posted it on the Canadian forum because didn't want any useless arguing and it seemed to work. There also is info in there of the intermediate shaft bearing (IMB bearing) that I got from Boca Bearings.

Excellent read. Looking forward to more DIYers picking up 996s and making great threads like this.

Are you still working with the theory that the broken chain tensioner was the root cause? What a bummer for the original owner... ten cents worth of material cost him a 911.

It's not a theory because the pieces that came out of the chain sprocket were tensioner pad material. The missing chunk was the same material. In essence the 200K miles caused the cam chain pads to wear away. Sort of like brake pads. This could have been avoided if these pads were changed at some point. The engine also had a failed AOS that was ignored for a very long time. Overall the owner drove it until it stopped running. He was the original owner to and when the engine finally died, he traded it in for a brand new Boxter. Financially this is the best way to buy a brand new car.....drive it into the ground.

I've updated the orignal thread on the Canadian Forum (see link in post #1). Two days ago when I cnaged the oil, the filter was full of metal. Pulling the engine in the winter and will update the original thread as I go along. Right now its too early for me to know where the metal came from.

Imre, how much mileage did you put on the car since you fixed the engine?

Please post more info when you get to it. What a bad way to start your winter. Were there any warning signs that made you look?
