Default Illustrated single DIN radio install walkthrough

I replaced the factory head unit with a single DIN Kenwood that has HD Radio, Bluetooth streaming and telephony. My car is a 2002 996 with Bose audio. I wanted a clean look, so I installed the Bluetooth microphone in the factory location to the left of the instrument cluster. Also, the rear USB connector attached to the head unit ends up in the cubby. I figured that I would take pictures as I went along to benefit myself in case I want to revert to stock or need to do it again for some reason, and I thought they might be useful for others.

Here's a picture of the completed install (the cassette holder was removed when I took the photo and I plan to replace it with another storage cubby.)

This is the download link for the walkthough (it is a 120MB PDF due to all the pictures.)

Awesome write up. I'm thinking of doing something similar very soon so the timing is excellent. How much of an improvement in sound quality did you notice?

Sound is an improvement but my main objective was to get Bluetooth audio and HD radio working. I notice that I get nothing out of the rear speakers and never thought to test this with the factory unit. At some point I will reconnect the factory unit to see if the rear speakers do work. Then I will troubleshoot from there.

I see from another post that you DJ so I think you would appreciate at least a speaker upgrade which I plan to do at some point. I will also look into replacing the amp.
