I mean even at $5k, unless you are willing to work on it yourself, it makes little sense when you can get plenty of these running around $15k.
But I assume better off buying a $5k car and then put $10k to then have a $15k with a new motor you can trust. problem is to find someone who can rebuild these things for less then $10k...
what did you guys do with your $5k cars? did they come with usable engine core ?

From my previous read I understand opening the block for a rebuild cost around $10k ? Or did you do it for less ?
So far aside of jack raby exorbitant rebuilds, $20k+, there are not any go to place to rebuild these engine really , no ?
I love these 996 and I'd be ready to buy another one but can't see any cheap rebuilder down here in Florida

There are plenty of other well qualified shops that are good at rebuilding these engines. I do all mynwork so I can't tell you who they are but don't beleive it for one second that there is only ONE shop on the planet that can rebuild these, or any other engine. They are piston engines and piston emgines are more or less then same. Those that worked on them will understand what I mean.
I fixed my non running 996. Cost for parts was $2K and the better part of all the evenings in the summer of 2012. I have a thread with details how my 996 project went.

That might have included a clutch as well.
Not counting labor, a complete rebuild will be a minimum of $4k in parts alone with imsb, rings, bearings, valve job, seals and gaskets.
I used to have a spreadsheet with all the current pats costs.

Mike if you can share the spreadsheet that would be nice
I would be curious to heard about how many hours shops did charge you for rebuild.
$5k for the shell and 10k for engine rebuild, at $15k with a new engine, these cars really are the bargain of the century ! I mean that is used mazda miata money !

You didn't have a scored cylinder or ovaling. You can't fix that your self and you'll need to sent it out which I hear is backed logged 10-12 weeks or find block haves that are good.

That's correct, my cylinders weren't scorred but since they looked good, I never checked to ovalness or anything else. One reason was that I was ONLY repairing the engine and not rebuilding.

If only I had the time I'd love to do a rebuild myself,
Jake, weren't you supposed to publish a dvd for engine rebuild or something ? I'd love to put my hands on it. Even though I don't think I'll ever do it, that should be a cool thing to watch

A DVD is not in the plans, for the vital folks I offer my Engine Rebuild Schools

Trust that your "cheap" rebuild will be the most expensive purchase that can be made. Thus far this year we've received 65 phone calls from those who went the cheap route, unfortunately most spent their money in the wrong manner and now cannot afford to do it right..
