Thanks, Guys.
Michigan has a no fault rule so although my premium cant get hit my insurance covers the cost after the deductible so all I get from the other drivers insurance is my deductible.
I will certainly consider buying the car back from the insurance co, but the appraiser cant make it out until next Wednesday so I'll have to wait and see.

Too bad, hope you make out all right physically and recover your possible Porsche loss.

That will buff right out! No, seriously, it sucks and I'm sorry. Although someone else said it earlier, the contrast of damage between the two cars is astonishing! That car looks like it hit a Mack truck. Yeah for Porsche!!

I may be just a bankruptcy attorney, but here's a little advice for anybody in an accident like this in the future: If you get hit and the damage is this bad, sit down immediately (or better yet don't get out of the car) and insist on getting an ambulance ride to the hospital to get checked out. You may feel fine today or even tomorrow, but you might also have an injury that you are not feeling just yet. If it is a slow-speed accident, then fine to just trade insurance info and get yourself home. But something that does this much damage to a steel car, you want to get yourself checked out by a doctor - you are not being a wuss by taking the ambulance ride to the emergency room. Play it safe and get checked out at the emergency room.
If you don't go to the emergency room and get checked out, you will be screwed if you are actually injured. Not only are you putting your health at risk by playing John Wayne, but you will have a very difficult time getting insurance to cover that back or neck injury that doesn't manifest itself in pain symptoms until a day or two after the crash. They are going to say that the injury was due to some other cause because you said you were fine at the accident scene and didn't seek medical attention or even bother to get checked out.
Lastly, when it comes time to negotiate the property damage claim (e.g.- how much they are going to pay for your car), having the personal injury claim that is inherent with the medical bills for the ambulance ride and emergency room visit (even if it was just precautionary) will give you leverage to settle up. They may treat the property damage and personal injury claim as completely separate, but having the personal injury claim will be helpful.

Andy, that really sucks!
Same thing happened to me in July with an 18 year old slamming into the rear of the Merc.
The Merc also didn't have much obvious damage considering the impact and I am a firm believer
that all things being equal, if you are in the German car, you are going to come out of an accident in better shape than the other guy.
If it had been my 911, I may have ended up in jail so kudos to you for your calmness!
The upside was that we made the decision to keep the Cayenne to replace the Merc instead of trading it in for the Macan S.
The neighbors are acting a bit weird though., On Sunday one neighbor was walking her dog as we were outside raking and the first thing she said was why do you have 3 Porsches.
Bless my wife who immediately blurted out "because we can" .
The topic changed right away!

Hope you sort things out easily to your satisfaction.

Have handy all the service/work receipts for the car so you can show the other insurance company's adjuster the car was loved.

Do not buy the car back and part it out. Take the money and run.

This parting out can be a nightmare. I lost my new (4 week old) 2008 Cayman S to an accident.

I kept the car -- not to part it out, but because the other driver's insurance wasn't enough to pay for the car out right -- with an allowance of $17000. With a salvage title I managed to sell the car at a salvage car auction for over $20K. The two buyers I guess planned on fixing the car.

Curious a month or two back I plugged in the car's VIN into a google search and believe it it or not found the car with most of its body intact (and apparently repaired though of course I do not know how well) for sale for $300.

So much for that parting out thing.
^^^ MI insurance is totally different.

You sold a wrecked car, did not part it out. If you have the mechanical knowledge, sales knowledge, and space for the car/parts, it is easy to make money off a totaled car, especially when parts are worth so much compared to the overall value of the car.

Who wants to start and run an auto salvage business with an inventory of one wrecked Porsche?

Really, this parting out thing... Some think its like finding gold coins in a can under tree roots or something.

It does appear MI insurance is different. That no fault thing I guess. Bummer.

I've seen a few 911s of various ages (including hers twice) take good solid rear end hits and come out far better than the car doing the hitting. Its all the structure around the engine.

Even having my Cayenne I still say that if I have to be in a serious accident, her 996 is what I want to be driving.

Well the insurance guy wants to send it to the local Porsche body shop for a proper estimate, Which is good I guess.
I have to agree the second time I've been hit hard in a Porsche and I have a lot of respect for the solidness of theses cars.
I'll update you guys as I hear more
