Default 148,000 miles on original water pump!

Amazed my mechanic and I that the water pump lasted that long before the bearing went out. I had no idea when I purchased the car that it was the original. I may have a record holding m96 water pump lol

You're supposed to bring up stuff that fails/breaks, etc., in the forum, not good stuff.
Also, by implication, your PCar has 148,000 miles on it. That's just not right!
Enjoy your ride!

You know the water pump is to be replaced every 40K miles, don't you?

J/K.

You may have the record on the M96 engine water pump longevity claim but my 2002 Boxster's original water pump lasted 172K miles. (I never got the memo about the 40K mile change interval I guess.)

Just out of curiosity, how do you know it was the original? Because, yea, 148k ... <mind blown>

Congrats on the 148,xxx lol.

I have 116,000, I see no evidence of replacement and I know the PO didn't replace it (and he had it for about 40k of its life). It's on my to-do list.

There is a high pitched noise when I start her up sometimes but I haven't gotten a stethoscope down there to figure out if it's the water pump. Someone mentioned SAI but I think this is too high pitched to be that.

And please excuse my idiocy and inexperience - what were your symptoms? Noises, temp rising?

Just as surprising when a pump fails at under 10,000 miles, it equally surprising when one skyrockets past 150,000 miles. You're always going to have the outliers.

My SAI pump bearings' "squeal" was very high pitched. Simple to hear as the pump is so easy to locate. The SAI pump spins at a relatively high RPM - higher RPMs = higher frequency sounds (usually).

my mechanic who is a Porsche expert gave me an explanation that I don't quite remember, but it had to do with the gasket that's how he found out

Were I a betting man, I would bet on your SAI.
They squeal at very high pitch at the most inopportune, starting moment.
Then you might not hear of it for months.
Basically the way mine has behaved for the last 2 yrs.

the bearing made a nasty noise started off as a faint whine that got worse I say do it right away don't let your car break down on you like mine did. The car never overheated with a bad water pump bearing it just leaked all the coolant lol which in return would of over heated my engine If I were to not catch that

If the pump was replaced before, most likely a new gasket was used and that requires cutting part of the original gasket.

So most likely he saw the original gasket still in place. Good that you caught it in time before it sheds its blades.
