no love for the 996 anywhere on the air cooled forums

I hate to disagree but I frequent 5 forums. The wheel horse guys, the pontiac guys, and the ford excursion guys never have anything bad to say. Even when I got my e60 5 series (the ones with the funny, I mean cool headlights, the bashing lasted only a little while. By the time the F10 5 series came the e60 bashing was long gone.

I didn't really have anything to add, but I couldn't resist doing SOMETHING if you're sitting there waiting...

...unless you're in a car with both.
I believe I could probably wipe the floor with 90% of the air-cooled Porsche snobs in existence with my $10K Corvette...and I know at least two guys with bone-stock early 986 Boxsters who can demolish me consistently. You can put the best driver in the crappiest car imaginable, and he's still got a good chance of beating any mediocre driver in a great car. Note that I am still endeavoring to master mediocre driving...
Everyone wants their club to be exclusive. Especially the a**holes.

Apparently the kid had already wrecked a couple of his mom's Porsches so she thought the Vette would be appropriate

Fast cars and stupidity are a wicked combo. I remember watching some tool with a brand-new Turbo spinning his car - over and over and over and over - because he couldn't wrap his head around turbo lag. He'd try to blast out of every corner, the turbo would spool, and the rear end came around, and I swear to God it was a surprise for this guy every single time.
I made sure not to work corners during his sessions.
My pool guy is one of the only guys who "gets it" - a garage with a Corvette and a 911 can be a fun garage indeed. I prefer the 'Vette in the rain - aluminum and fiberglas don't rust, and with ASR off (primitive PSM), it's like being on a skid pan.

Comparing AC cars and WC cars is like comparing apples and oranges. Quantitatively the WC cars win every time. Qualitatively, not so much. I've had a 996 (40th anniversary) and a 997... You'll never hear me bash them. They are great cars. I just decided that the AC cars were more appealing to me.
Now, get back to checking your IMS, RMS, AOS, etc.and I'll get back to checking my head studs, valve guides, etc.
