4S only?
Quick question ... Other then the turbo, the only 4wd 996 was the 4s correct?
The targa was only 2wd back then ..right?
I lost my 01TT .. and my 06 cayenne S in a house fire a couple of years ago. Just getting back in ......... I liked the TT's 4wd in the rain.
I don't need the TT's power for the amount I'm going to use it.
Some good prices around for low mile 2wd ....noticed a nice Targa w/ 22k.

Not correct. The Carrera 4 is all-wheel drive, hence the name.
The 996 C4, like my MY 1999, was the first e-gas model, and also came with PSM. Non-4 99 996's have a mechanical throttle linkage. Mine also has a gas cooler in the engine compartment that uses the AC to cool the fuel. Neat odds and ends with this car...

So they did make a "4" I could not remember if a "4" was produced or if it was only in "S" form . My memory is telling me that all the Targa's were 2wd .. as was the 40th ..even with the TT nose.
... did not pay much attention as I had the TT as my DD ... but I drove it less and less .. and now I think a nice 996 to 997 would do me well.

I don't know about the Targas - sorry, mate.
I like the C4, although many prefer the 4S for its turboishness. The Carrera was already wide enough for me (I have some serious cone rash on my car from misjudging the car's width when I first got it) - I probably would have inflicted even more damage with a C4S's fat rear.

The targa of 996 vintage is only rwd, as is the 40th anniversary edition. Hope this helps. I have a MK2 C2 without PSM. The car lives in Reno Nevada and runs summer tires year round. I haven't had any problems with losing control at all, that's the benefit of having some FAT rear tires on the Carreras big behind

One thing that never existed was a Carrera S RWD.

First gen 996 ('99-'01) included a C4 (AWD). Body-wise, these were the same as the C2 in appearance. There were apparently welds and stiffeners added to the C4, but these were unseen changes.
Second gen 996 ('02-'04) included the C4S which had the wide body of the turbo as well as different front and rear bumpers. I have read that there was also a C4 (non wide-body) made in the gen 2 era, but they seem pretty rare.

was behind a very nice looking late model blue Targa 4 the other day ... nice.
I never tired of my TT ... car had great balance and was like glue in the rain. I used to have a beach house back when it was new .... drove it out there all the time ... now we go to the country
I'm thinking the 4 would be better in the hills ......That is why I bought the Cayenne.

Keep in mind that the 996 4WD using the VC, Viscous Clutch was/is WORTHLESS!
Absent some level of rear wheelspin, what PSM does not allow, the VC remains forever flaccid.
You get it to stiffen up temporally by turning PSM/Trac off, and then doing about 4 accelerating tight circles.
You will have 4WD for the next few seconds.
