Chill.
Skip the thread or abort reading it when you come up on the dreaded 3 or 4 letters.
I don't mind the IMS(B) threads. I can take them or leave them, as I do many other threads, but if someone is concerned about this and wants to ask about it and get some of the latest info and opinion, I see nothing wrong with that.
Using the search function is often suggested, but I know when I've searched for something too many times the searches turn up about a zillion hits and it is tough to wade through all the mud to find the treasure.
And if one does find the thread there is reviving a years' old thread thing if he wants more detail or an update.
If you don't like IMS(B) threads don't read them and certainly don't post to them.

I am chilled thanks
I just feel it's crazy the about of IMS threads that ask the exact same question, 2 minutes after a previous post.
I go on other car and bike forums and they all have sub forums, I think our forum would benefit from the same. Then members who want to can read IMS threads till their hearts content.
I'm not suggesting banning them or deleting them, just have an IMS sub forum.
If you want to be fair to all members take a poll on this clearly divisive topic

agreed. it drives me nuts that the mods allow so much non technical jibber jabber. IDGAF how pretty your car looks set against the backdrop of the blueridge mountains...I really dont. no buddy does. STAHP. If you want to post that ****, pay up and goto off-topic. /rantoff

As a non owner looking to get into a Porsche 996 someday I like reading everything I can get my hands on about possible issues with the car. I never knew this IMS issue even existed or how serious it could be before reading this forum. Believe me this forum is much better set up than the Corvette Forum I'm a member of. Fully half of the threads there are vendors hawking their products or stupid topics like "what's your car's name?" I agree that all of the doom and gloom about the IMS can color your perception and make you think twice before buying one of these beautiful cars but I think it also helps having all the information readily available.

True, each viewer can filter out the IMS threads manually but why not keep things organized especially clearly there are folks extremely interested in these IMS threads.

No matter how much we bitch, nothing is going to stop pretty much every new owner from posting:
* An "IMS - think it'll happen to me" thread
* A "wow, I just found out how much tires cost, do I really need N-rated ones" thread
* A "hey, which oil do you think I should use" thread.
Regardless of whether you think this sucks, I think it's accurate - so how can we better sort the technical discussion from the new 996 owner questions? I don't think owners should be discouraged from asking any questions, but I also don't think every one needs to dissolve into a bitchfest with weak pr0n.
The 996 DIY thread, which should be huge given the amount of traffic 996 forum gets, only has 10 items in it, so the 996 forum is the primary technical resource, not the DIYs. Being able to post chaff is nice - and is good for new members, but separating it from the wheat would sure be handy.

Maybe we could have a Engine and mechanical Questions related sub forum, though some of these sub forums are easy to not see so it may not help. Personally I just ignore IMS threads.

The reality is nothing's going to change. There is no way the forum can make EVERYONE happy. Those that are really bothered by certain posts will finally just skip over them, some will just quit coming here. Most will just continue as they have, its just the way it is.

The problem with subforums is that it requires the posted information the be further sliced and diced and subcategorized.
We already have subforums on RL: for each model of car, for sale, racing, etc. I think that's sufficient. We have a very good search function, so if someone wants to read a bunch of IMSB threads, they can easily find them.
Now, what would we do if someone posted about the IMSB issue and about oil in the same thread? Move it to the IMSB subforum? Move it to the oil subforum? Replicate the thread and put it in the IMSB and oil subforums?
As annoying as the IMSB questions are, I realize that there are many new 996 owners that are just learning of this wonderful feature of their cars, and therefore can be somewhat forgiven for not realizing that they are giving a hornet's nest a kick when they make their posts.
996pp has the best solution to the IMSB thread issue:
Then, everyone's happy.
Shall we give it a go the next time a newbie IMSB thread pops up, and see what happens? This requires 100% participation to work.

996pp: I have a better idea. How about every time a stupid ims thread pops up we just post boobie pics without a single word.

You asked for it, I will be keeping a better eye on things.
And enough with the boobies. I like them as much as the next guy but they do not belong in a tech forum. We have an off topic area for this.
Thanks.
