First new car I ever purchased was a 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel 4 speed manual, great car. Got nearly 50mpg but sometimes into a headwind you couldn't get it up to 55mph. Only had 52hp!.

Speaking of British, I also inherited a 1971 MG BGT. Wife’s father bought it new. Fun project car with my son. Motor is currently out while we install a new clutch

1976 VW type II transporter - looked a lot like this. Had it from 1983 through 1997. Made about 100 trips between Tucson and San Francisco. Over the grapevine on I-5 I could hold 40 mph no matter the load inside and on top.

Red on Red 1982 Capri RS 5.0 (mustang rebadged). Fast for the time, very nose heavy. Loved it.

A friend of mine had one of those old Rabbit Diesels -- he bought it for $400 -- it was worn out and quad-color: grey, primer, rust, and perforations . And, of course, it was much slower than molasses. He had a custom banner made for across the top of the windshield that said "OUTAMYWAY!!" printed backwards (so that drivers ahead of him could read it in their rear view mirror). I couldn't stop laughing the first time he pulled into my driveway with that thing.

4 cylinder, 1980 Chevy Monza. $50.00. The guy had just put a $100 stereo in it. True story. 2nd car was Dodge Charger 2.2, 1985. What a great car. Third car started my car passion. Mint 1982 Datsun 280zx. Daily drove it for 5 years plus. And the rest is history as they say.

White 1989 BMW 325i Sedan w/ 5speed manual. I sold it to a guy who was in air force and it went back to Germany where it became a Ring car. He later brought it back state side years later but I wasn't in the position to buy it back at the time.
