Default Last DIY: Tips & Tricks on oil filler pipe

Hello forum, because I am selling my beloved 02 996 C2 today, I had to do some last day DIY yesterday to fix the long overdue and dreaded oil filler pipe.

I've found quite a few DIY guides on this subject but thought I would give my experience on the matter as my last post as an actual Porsche owner.

Tips:
  1. If you've got keyboard fingers or computer physics you do not need to remove the throttle body and plenum. Your can to this job despite the cramp space.
  2. Have your magnet on a stick ready, you will be dropping screws and bolts in hard to reach places.
  3. I got the "new and improved" 997 version , it does not have the double accordion and is way cheaper. Downside, it's a snug fit.
  4. About that snug fit, we were two friends doing the same repair on our identical cars, and my friend (much more experienced) said to get rough. Take your hand around that thing and wiggle, force it in (ahem). After about two minutes of forcing and wiggling it sat flush.
  5. Last and most important tip of all, always undo the foremost oil filler pipe bolt first, and very important, remove both bolts before removing the actual pipe. Cannot imagine the work needed to fish out a bolt from the insides of the holiest of holies (engine).

Thank you all for a very informative forum, have gotten lots of help here. Will become a Paid member as a last THANK YOU and continue to stalk the forum.

Plenum removal is not needed unless you are Godzilla handed. Removing the airbox, MAF, TB, belt, and alternator gives you enough access. Alternator was a bitch for me, as that spring loaded "thing" on the alternator was dead stuck for me. Use the extension mirror to look for the bolts on the old filler pipe. Bolts location for reference.

Mine broke off close to where it meets the air box. $3 at home depot bought me a inch and a half (I think it was that size) rubber connecting piece.

I'm cheap.

tackling this this weekend.
what lube did you use for the rubber o-ring? engine oil or the gold standard grease they recommend?

this is my third time in there....1st was to replace it with the old part number that didn't fit (!) so sewed it all back up.....second time was to modify the tube so I could drive it while waiting for the part to arrive...and now the third. should be a snap.

Engine oil...slipped right in. I figured that was going to be it's life anyway. Be careful once you have it out. You don't want to drop anything in there!

Completed this this am...2.5 hrs start to finish. Had to really cram the end of the pipe in there but it eventually went in. I had to remove the plenum...made it so much easier and only takes 1 minute to pop off and 2 minutes to put it back on.
Cross that sucker off the to do list.
Next up ... Window regulator. But thatll be a winter project

Can I ask a stupid question? Why did you change it? What happened? Just curious if there's something I should be on the lookout for?

996inTX, as filler pipe gets old it gets bitter and can break/crack when you unclamp it from the air-box.

CDL, explain your procedure for putting the plenum back in please. I was fighting that thing for a very long time to put it back in between the rubbers.

In addition to getting bitter ("Stay off my lawn," "I never liked the b***h anyway"), the filler pipe also gets brittle with age.
