Default Broken exhaust tip hanger

I changed out my OEM mufflers for a set of Fister cans last weekend and couldn’t be happier with the change in sound. While swapping them out, I wanted to locate the source of a rattling noise that occurred when idled and at low RPMs. I assumed it was a loose heat shield, but after removing the mufflers and tips, found out that the exhaust hanger bracket was snapped in half (on the pipe that connects muffler and exhaust tip).

I planned on taking the hanger and exhaust tip to a shop to weld together, but accidently pitched the broken bracket with towels, gloves and old screws from the project. Now, the only thing holding the exhaust pipe on is the C clamp at muffler out junction.

Does anybody have a recommendation for what to do – buy new pipe with bracket, fabricate a hanger at shop, homemade solution, etc.?

Does anybody drive around with only C clamp holding on their exhaust tip? I’m worried pipe and tip will fall off…and then the muffler burning up my bumper.
Feel like a doofus for not checking for the hanger before tossing stuff…thanks in advance for advice.

Hmmm..not sure what hangar? http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=202-00

My tail pipe tips are only connected to the muffler with the clamps. I suppose you could remove both and take them to a welding shop to fabricate a new hangar. But I don't know what hangar it is. Pics?

Another ?. The 996 exhaust doesn't have "hangers" in the traditional sense. There is a bracket at the front of the engine, near the bottom of the carrier, with arms that clamp to the catalytic converters; mine broke off years ago and I have not yet replaced it. Is that the hanger you're referring to?

5CHN3LL...yes, I believe it's the bracket you're speaking of. It's welded to the muffler pipe and is held on to the catalytic converter by a bracket. Attached a photo of bracket (not my car)

Isn't that a picture of a 997 Sport Version? See here:

Anyway, seems if you want just that bracket that is already welded on the exhaust can pipe, your will have to have one made and welded on. Although if your Fisters didn't come like that, then I have no idea what is going on. Or maybe find a junk yard with a used can w/bracket.

...mine was slightly cracked and the hidden cause of the worst rattle. To remedy, I had bought a used muffler for that side, so when i went to replace and found the crack, I took off, muffler fine and going nowhere...the tip, well, for the last few years and 10kish miles is fine as well

Between the extra hanger and the pleated piping, this does not look like a 996. Park distance sensors are also in the wrong place for a 996.

Andrew: This seems to be a common problem. I was whining awhile back about mine being cracked/broken, both sides on my 2005 996 C4S. I was also looking for a buzzy noise at idle and low RPM. At least one other member had the same issue. I tightened the mounting clamp for the tips which eliminated the noise and plan to have welded this winter while stored. I have not been able to locate the pipe/clamps on any of the offered diagrams.

Try LA Dismantler / Oklahoma Foreign / Specialized German / qualityporscheparts

I think they all have stores on eBay and will have the bracket you need

left or right ?

I hate to keep beating a dead horse, but, you replaced your OEM mufflers with Fisters, sooooooo, if that part is welded on the OEM muffler, why is it not welded on the Fisters?

No 1999-2005 996 has that bracket welded on the exhaust pipe, at least as far as the parts diagrams showing the various cans and exhaust tips. And the exhaust pipe from the muffler doesn't hang down like that. But, then we have the 2005 997 which does show it. But then we have members showing that they do have the bracket on a 996. What year? Did they cross over in 2005 and used 997 parts on a 996? I'm confused.

Actually, since they tend to break and cause mysterious rattles...I would grind those off and ditch them. The clamp has sufficient strength to hold the tips on.
