Wait, I thought these engines were water cooled, not oil cooled.

Correct. From my understanding, as much as 50% cooling can come from the oil.

IMO, the best way to search Rennlist is through Google. Try "996 oil site:Rennlist.com" and you'll find the threads that TTB referred to.

Jake Raby recommends DT40, so that's what I use. Not cheap, but considering the price of a new engine, reasonable.

Just finished a shorter interval with Castrol 0W40, currently have Pennzoil 0W40 in the sump. Previous owner ran M1 0W40.
If I ever do a track day, I'll probably look at FSI's recommendations, otherwise I'll stick with a brand name xW40, a 5K interval, and not sweat it too much.

And, FWIW, Motul 8100 5w40, Wix 51042 filters on a LN spin-on filter adapter. 5 liter jugs of Motul usually run about $35 shipped through Amazon Prime, a little less if you catch a sale elsewhere.

I like to wait outside my local autozone with empty milk jugs and buy oil from people bringing it in to recycle..... J/K. Oil preference is almost as daunting as the age old: blonde, brunette or redhead question.

James, I am new here and found many things don't come up when I do a search on the forum. However, if you do it a google search it will sometimes bring up two or more threads on the subject.

BTW: I am in Houston and run Mobil 1 5/40 FWIW.

Not only is google a better search engine for rennlist, it also includes Renntech, Planet9 & others that have great content scattered amidst the chatter.
