Default Oil Change Help

I have oil drained from both plugs.

I am putting on fresh filter. I changed the big O ring but do not know where the small O ring goes.

A little help?

Thanks,
Michael

ok. figured it out. When I pulled the filter the plastic piece in the center stem did not come out too. Being cautious I did not want to force it and break it.

I gently pulled and it popped out.

It is overall a simple job. I bought the oil filter socket, put some hockey tape around the inside circumference of the socket and it fit snug and the filter assembly came off easily.

9 quarts got the oil level to two lines above minimum so I am going to drive a little more, check again and add another 1/2 quart. I always fear overfilling in my exuberance to be done.

What I bought for job:

Oil Filter Socket
Both drain plugs and washers
Oil Filter
Two O rings: one large and one small
10 quarts of Motul

One note of caution. The oil splatters like crazy when you pop the drain plugs out. Particularly the oil reservoir.

While it was messy, it is nowhere near as much of a damn mess as a 993 oil change. And the upside is your garage floor will be nicely lubricated. Haha.

I lay down a plastic sheet, then back the car out until the tail overhangs the edge of the garage floor.

My oil pans slide right under the car, so no jacking required. Job takes about 30 minutes. Simplest change on any car I've owned.

It's hard to keep the oil from going everywhere when popping out the drain plugs. I have gone through several different drain pans and found the long open trough style drain pan works the best for me. Make sure you use 2 wrenches on the oil reservoir.

Yup. A very easy oil/filter change and if you do it, and you know the procedure, you save some nice bucks. Here I also drain and refill the transmission. That requires more time and patience, but since I track the car, I like to have clean fluids before it's stored in my garage for five months. I do other pre storage items too. I want a "happy" car in storage.

Here's a tip from a 997 GT3 owner about using an old metal window screen to help with splashing.

OP - glad you were able to figure everything out with your oil change.

I have never seen the oil filter housing come apart like that, I wonder if it impacts the function of the bypass valve?

I replaced the plastic oil filter housing with a new OEM part recently... cheap insurance

I installed a Stahlbus valve on the reservoir tank, it works great.

No big splashes or concerns about strain on the tank when removing/torquing. Plus, doing a "partial" change (no case, just the dry sump tank) takes < 5 minutes

The center stem just snaps back into the cover and its some what normal for it to pop out when removing the filter.

Hi could you share what size Stahlbus drain bolt you purchased? I was checking them out but there are a few options.
Thanks,
Michael

I was curious about the stahlbus as well, but after doing the change with a $5 frypan spatter screen over my drain pan and making zero mess I think I will leave the plugs alone. Yes I have a set of tires on order

I no longer have my 6GT3, but did many oil changes. I don’t know the cost now, but that small o ring was something like $9.00. I bought a pack of 50 from McMaster Carr for about $5.00. There were red, rated for 600 F, and worked fine.

Where are you guys sourcing the small o-ring? It does not seem to come with the oil kits I have been purchasing.

It has always come with the Liqui-moly kits I buy from FCP Euro.
