Steel Synchros
The GT3 has steel synchros for durability I assume. 911's other than the GT2/3have softer bronze alloy synchros because they shift smoother or are quieter I assume. Does a GT3 shift more notchy and are my assumptions correct?
I can't tell the differance between the two transaxles in actual driving and I wonder why they don't just put steel synchros in all of them if they are more durable?
As an aside, the aftermarket needle bearing linkage ends make a huge differance in the way the box feels.

GT3 tranny is "notchy" but precise. On the blip double clutch, the compression of engine and tranny from the blip work so beautifully together that the tranny slides into the lower gear with precision and finality. It's very positive, much more than the Carrera tranny. I love the GT3 tranny. But it can be notchy in upshifts too, which is a bit wierd.

And on the Mk1 GT3 (which of course you didn't get in the US), none of the 6 gears had steel synchros.....common upgrade to the Mk1 'boxs when rebuild time though.

Brass is softer than Steel
Brass is softer than Steel. So my guess is that the brass synchros will feel a little smoother/softer/less notchy - at but the expense of wear. Porsche says that the standard 6 speed 997 transmissions are now more durable because they switched from brass to steel synchros.

The 997 Carreras use a new box from the Japanese company Aisin. Does anyone know if this is also true for the 997 GT3s, or do they still use the Getrag unit?
