Default Will Mk2 wheels fit a Mk1

Hi all,

I have a Mk1 GT3 Clubsport and want to buy a set of track wheels and tyres for it. I like the look and price of the OZ Racing Alleggerita wheels from Tirerack with Michelin Cups. Anyway, the sizes they recommend for the GT3 Mk2 are:
F: 18x8.5 +40mm
R: 18x11 +63mm

The stock wheels on a Mk1 GT3 are:
F: 18x8 +52mm
R: 18x10 +65mm

Has anyone done this and knows that they fit without any body mods or spacers?

Thanks
Mike

My MK2 wheels fit on a friend's 1999 996 C2 with PSS9 suspension no problem so they will fit a MK1. I'd check that recommended 40mm offset for the front wheels that doesn't look right. I'm pretty sure the right number is 50 or 52. 40mm puts them out too far and I'd expect problems hitting the fender and fender liner.

tire rack gave you the correct offsets for a MKII...the rears will be 1/2 inch closer to the inner wheel wells and 1/2 inch closer to the fender and you may have rubbing issues....the fronts would be 1/4 inch closer inside and outside if they had the same offset but there is nearly an inch difference...they won't fit without huge spacers (23mm) and you will probably have serious rubbing issues moving the wheel out more than an inch (1/4 wider wheel and 23mm spacer)...get the right wheels for your car

Thanks Leigh and Chuck. One thing I should also have mentioned is that I will be running the same size tyres front and rear to what I run on the std Mk1 rims, ie:
F: 235/40-18
R: 295/30-18

This leads me to think that the rears will be ok. The fronts are a worry because my uderstanding of offsets says that the smaller offset on the Mk2 wheel will push it towards the outer fender. I think this means that spacers will make the problem worse and I don't like running them as they are illegal in Australia.

The other option from Tirerack is to go with the 8.5 inch wheel they recommend for the 2000 C2 for the front:
F: 18x8.5 +53mm

This may work ok. Bit of a punt still though.

Thanks again fellas and if anyone has done this on a Mk1 please let me know.

Mike

MKI had a 5mm spacer @ front from the factory, so that brings the effective offset to 47mm.
I have GT3mkII front wheel carriers, GT3 control arms with 5mm shims and 5mm spacers for wheels to clear front brakes. With 2.8 deg camber there's about 3cm air between the tyre and wheelarch. OTH the front wheel is still humble 7.5x18" et 52 with 225's. ( I'll get 8x18" 's with 235's for next season. ) At rear there's 10x18" et 65 with 17mm spacer, again with GT3 control arms and 4mm shims. They fill wheel wells quite nicely. And no rubbing whatsover.

Mike,

Those offsets from Tirerack for the Alleggeritta are spot on. The 40MM offset moves the wheel "outward" which actually helps you to further clear the calipers and the much needed at the suspension strut.

The rear ET63 is exactly the same as the MKII GT3 has from the factory and will fit perfectly on a MKI car. There are no differences in the rear body and suspension geometry.

As another member said.. his stock GT3 wheels fit perfectly on a Mk1 996 C2, this is a very popular upgrade for the MK1 996 folks.
Cheers!

No offense intended but you have the concept of offsets backward. The ET 40 wheel is exactly what he wants for a Mk1 or Mk2 GT3.

The ET40 wheel sits further out than the ET 52 not the other way around.

Mike, I have a 1999 MK1 and have fitted the MK2 wheels. The rears fit just within the fender. The fronts did rub until I removed the 5mm spacer. I ended up removing the rear spacers as well as the fit was very close. I have 235 tyres up front and 295 tyres on the rear. Hope this helps.

OZ makes that wheel in a 9" front et43 as well which also should work as long as the stock 8.5 et40 works on the MKI.

So what's the definitive anwer here, does it depend on the geometry of the car ( i have 3 neg camber on my mk1) or is the fitting of Factory MK2 wheels a straight swap on a standard car with no rubbing issues.
I am currently running 295/30 rears on mk1 rims with no probs does the extra inch in the mk2 affect the width of the same tye much?

315/30 Pirelli Corsas on the 11" GT3 rears also fits. No spacer.

Nice car Bill, not another rare Biarritz White Mk1 is it? Rolling radius of 315/30 has to be quite a bit more than 285/30 how do you compensate?

The diff is minor and with a fully adjustable susp. it's well within spec for my track/street setup.

MPSC 285/30 25.1" dia.
MPSC 295/30 25.2"
Corsa 315/30 25.5"

Now if you went to the common 19" upgrade the 'bling' boys like then you're looking at ~26.3". Might make the gearing change noticeable.

I run 285 MPS2 or Contis on the street. The 315 are my track tires. But I must say that the Pirelli Corsas have been an excellent compromise street/track tire for anyone looking for a true competition tire that can also be driven regularly on the street.
