Still, if the dealer blows him off and gives him a hard time, it's a fairly easy fix using my article to modify and cut out the bumper.

The Bumper cover is for a GT3 and it is fine, it's the Bumper grill that is behind the bumper cover that is incorrect. You can cut out the opening or replace it with the correct grill. Like I said, this exact issue happen to me when I purchased my used 2004 GT3.
I didn't notice it until a fellow rennlister (Carefree) pointed it out at a HPDE event in Portland last Feb 09. I did a little digging and figured out the wrong part was installed. I removed the bumper cover and Re&Re the correct bumper grill, problem solved.

I arrived at 11:00 and asked Sue (the service manager) to speak with Carl. She said that he has gone out of town for the weekend and was not available.
I know where he was, in 10th place.....

most dealers techs are incompetent. i said most, not all.
b/c most (not all) techs who are really interest in the cars ultimately go out and open their own shops.

Don't know if this has been resolved, but it makes my list of one of the damnedest things I have heard lately! I don't expect the dealer techs to know everything, but this is about as obvious as a missing wheel.

Status update: 05/05/10 – I received a call from Mike in the service department yesterday afternoon. He said that both him and Carl have taken a close look at the car and have ordered the new grill and the shroud that focuses the air towards the radiator. He said that the front bumper has been replaced before and is the correct GT3 bumper. He said that they were going to call in a body shop specialist to remove the bumper and replace the parts. The job should be completed today or tomorrow. The dealer is covering the cost of the parts and installation. I am very happy to hear that they are taking care of the whole thing.

Once I get the car back, I will post pictures. Maybe you guys could let me know if it looks right.

Should of taken their loaner Boxster S up to Willow Springs. Would have loved to see Carl's face as you drove his loaner around the track. As I said privately, he's a straight up good guy though his techs could use a refresher in client protocals....

Good result but that sounds like severe overkill. Any Porsche service department could have that bumper off, replace the insert with the correct part and put back on within an hour, max 2. Why does it need to go to a specialist body shop?, there's no painting involved, it's a push and clip fitting...

Sadly, I have found that Rennlisters are routinely more knowledgeable about these cars than today's dealership mechanics. I can't tell you how many times I have had to lead them by the hand after getting excellent tips herein.

It sounds like the servicing dealership screwed up. The car probably went into a repair shop to have a new front bumper installed and the servicing facility failed to follow up to ensure things were done correctly.

What a nightmare! Best of luck with your resolution. A word to the wise--always check the other guys' work.

Status update: I was told by the service manager that the car would be ready on Thursday and that he would call me. The call didn't come. I waited all day Friday for a call and nothing. I'm not worried because I know that the dealer is making it right. I have been having a blast with their boxster s.

This little task (re&re front bumper & bumper grill) took me 2 hours and 3 beers and I'm definitely not a "body shop specialist".

Most of the 996 GT3 rennlist members that have rad screens installed did this similar task as a DIY, again no special skills needed.

Not sure why it's taking so long in your case. Enjoy the Boxster S it's truly a great sports car.

Well, I finally got a call from Mike (the manager of the service department) saying that the car was finished and ready for me to pick up. I drove down after work and picked it up today. Everyone was very polite. Mike and I went out to look the car over. Everything looked to be put back perfectly, no scratches at all. I did notice that a couple of clips were missing on the inside fender well and Mike called his tech out and he replaced the missing pieces no questions asked. I have to say, even though it took them a while, they did a good job and made things right even though then didn’t have to.

Thank you everyone for your input on this, I couldn’t have done it without you.

Here is a link to what it looked like before I took it back to the dealer:

Here is a link to pictures of the corrected center grill:

Please let me know if this looks correct to you guys.

Missing the clips and having the customer find them on a quick inspection says a lot about a shop.

Looks normal now. I'll see you one of these days at C&C.

I don't think that they were prepared for someone as detail oriented as me. I guess that's why I'm an accountant.
