what would it take to make a 6 gt3 sound like this?
So two weeks ago my buddy and I flew up to Vegas to pick up his new toy: a 2010 gt3 that had been upgraded to a 4.0l after the prior owner missed a shift and lunch the engine at the track. The thing is a beast, of course, but the most impressive thing to me is the sound. It has gmg headers/cats and center muffler section. It sounds nothing, I mean nothing like our cars. No rasp at all. The modified 997.1 gt3's I've heard sound similar, and I know the engine architecture is virtually identical to our cars.
Sooooo, is it a matter of just bolting up a 997.1/.2 exhaust and modifying our bumper to accept a center exit, or is it more involved? The sound is just insane. I'll have to post up a clip next time I'm around the car. Attached is a crappy cell phone picture picking the car up to drive it back to AZ.

You need to merge the exhaust banks to get that sound. My biggest let down with my car was the way it sounded. More and more companies are making center sections with merge pipes (x-pipe as they are marketed) to get you that sound without having to go to center exit which requires a new rear bumper.
Not to say you can't go that route. The 997 exhausts have a larger diameter and should provide a power bump and you can generally find take-off's every now and then for not a ton of money, the muffler brackets are an OEM part and not hard to find. The biggest issue is you need to run a cup rear bumper to get the center exit.
If you want to retain the rear bumper fabspeed, FVD, and Speedtech all offer center sections that you could use with your factory headers and mufflers to get that sound. My personal opinion is that the OEM diameter of the stock system is what holds back it's power potential but if you're looking for a slight bump and that sound in particular those are great options. Cargraphic, FVD, and Charles' custom exhaust that many have here offers a full system with merged exhaust and larger diameter for the whole system offering the best power potential. They can be pretty loud though so keep that in consideration.
I had a custom unit made with x-pipe from my fabricator and couldn't be happier. Sounds amazing and gets compliments all the time.

Hmmmm, so if I add the final x-cat peice which I'm lacking now (I think fabspeed makes one), it will sound more 997-ish? Or, is the "x" portion actually an entirely new muffler set up? I'd love to keep the fabspeed mufflers and headers and just add something to the cat section that would "merge" the banks, if that would do the trick!

I'm going to get a clip of my buddy's car tonight tonight. Its insane how awesome that car sounds!
Thanks for the advice guys! Mooty, I'm assuing the set-up you describe is going to be insanely loud. That's not really my aim...I'm more after the sweet tone of the 7 gt3 cars. I don't mind additional volume/drone (my turbo drones like crazy with my catless switzer exhaust but I love it), but my true aim would be the tone.
Chris/Evan, what is the volume difference between the catted sport pipe and the cat bypass? Pretty significant difference? How does the tone compare? Its hard to get a sense from you-tube videos!

I have one of Charles D exhausts which is an x-pipe design with headers, Burns mufflers. It is similar to an M&M exhaust. Not only does it sound like no other 6GT3 I have ever heard it also helped gain 20whp.

Anyway a cross flow section exhaust will really give you the sound you're looking for with some sport cats, or cat bypass... What will really liven the car up is a lightweight flywheel also, especially with the revs

Three Wheelin'
I have the newer version of above exhaust by Charles Dundon, Seattle, WA.
Every HPDE I have at least 5 people come over to talk about the exhaust and how great it sounds.
