Default Wiring Upgrade -- Pictures Attached

Thus far, albeit not in this case for a TT, my wiring upgrade has yielded a weight savings of 41.5 pounds and counting.

I am not even positive what he is doing but it looks to me like he is rewiring his car (replacing stock harnesses with low weight versions). The fact that he pulled 40+ pounds out of the car doing this is amazing. You have to look at the other incredible things he is doing with cf to believe what he is after in terms of weight reduction.

I guess a better question is where does the weight reduction come about. Different connectors, reduced numbers, something inherent about the wire?.

Wouldn't it be interesting if there was a present day 911R -- for instance, 2200 pounds (i.e., 1000+ pounds lighter than a 996) with either 425 normally aspirated horsepower or even a turbo engine.

P.S. In the case of the lightweight harness, weight reduction comes from several sources including higher spec wire, lighter (and safer) jackets and redesign. As to the connectors, in fact, proper mil spec connectors generally weigh more than the Porsche OE pieces (although, in some instances, composite motorsport connectors can be used).

Now if that does'nt describe Porsche obsession, I don't know what does...Amazing work...Never considered electrical connections as a way to put a P-car on a diet....Wow!!!!!

Looks like one used Raychem wiring and labels. Very nicely done, especially with all proper crimp connectors.

KRA993tt

In my mind, this idea would have a retail of $300,000 (with no extra cost options) -- but, at this weight and with the technology in it that I would theoretically envision, would be well worth the price. And, by the way, even with a normally aspirated 425 HP engine would be among the fastest and best handling cars in the world.

Geoffrey

The wire pictured is Raychem 55A and M spec with Raychem DR 25 regular and lightweight jackets (battery and emergency cutoff cables are not Reychem but are aluminum). The connectors are Deutsch aluminum and composite (milled even further when possible) and Porsche OE where required. The trick, of course, is in engineering the package and in the execution -- and, particularly with regard to the latter, there are very few people in the world I would employ.
