My friend is ASKING $89,000 for his 10K mile 01 TT....I think he would let it go for mid 80's.

what's the difference in price between each year ?
2001 versus 2002 versus 2003, etc.

What's an 'accurate' source for gauging market value ?
I know it's kind of subjective..... but still...

KBB says one thing, Edmunds has another #, and I'm sure
other sources will have other values too.

Also... if you look on EBay... I see quite a few with asking prices (reserves, etc.) that don't lead to a sale. In fact, i saw one go up for sale... sell... and the car came back onto the market again.

KBB is over priced on it estimate of the TT's. At least it was last time I checked.

NADA-avg.trade $81,725
avg. retail $89,300

These numbers are consistent with e-bay "buy it now prices".

Edmunds was $10k higher.

I know of an 01 with 10k asking $87,900

I stand corrected... I just got out of my wife's Benz and they were at least 3K over true value on the Benz. Edmunds was about the same.

did you have to part with it for 3k under low retail or trade in?

I will tell you when you see the difference between KBB's
definition of GOOD and EXCELLENT there is not much difference.
But there is a $4200 price differential on the 996tt.
These are the kind of things that make pricing not an exact
science. I think we all would agree that a BRAND NEW car may
not meet many buyers idea of excellent.

Can you expand on this ? I read the 'definitions' of 'excellent', etc. etc.

Wouldn't everyone agree that a brand new car would be in
'excellent' condition ?

Assuming no damage occured during shipment from factory to dealer, to delivery to owner ?

Hello AndyWoo,

My point here as far as placing a value on a car is that the
condition can be VERY subjective.
What one buyer feels is acceptable wear on a 10k mi. car
another will consider unacceptable.
When you look at the KBB spread of $4200 between GOOD and EXCELLENT
on the 996tt you can do a whole lot of freshening up on a car for that $$.

Some of the people on this board would consider a Concour
winning car to be Excellent. Try taking a brand new 996tt
fresh from the detail shop at the dealer with say 60 miles on it
and show it and see how you do.

I was told by at least 2 dealers that they pay between 5%-10% UNDER KBB "Good" Trade-In value for all cars. According to them, no vehicle (other than high demand items like SL55) get "excellent" full price trade ins.

Hi ExoticBro : Got what you mean. Yeah... a new car in 'showroom' condition, may not do 'well' in a concours level scrutiny those cars go through. Although, one would THINK that they would be without flaw when 'delivered new' from the dealer. Or one would "hope" :-) But I get your point.

Trojan Man : Interesting info. So, they pay 5-10% of the 'Good" trade-in value, and then they try to sell at dealer retail "excellent" ? Is that their plan for making the profit ? :-)

keep in mind that KBB and NADA prices are based on the average of all used cars sold since the model came out. 996 prices have been dropping in the last couple of years, but this has only served to lower the prices on KBB and NADA, not make them truly indicative of what dealers/private parties are actually paying TODAY. based on my experience, you should take 10% off the KBB prices and that's about what you should expect to pay for a used car or get for a trade-in.
