X50 question
I know the X50 package has the upgraded K24 turbos. Is this turbo a more robust turbo than whats found on the regular 996 TT? Other than the different turbos, does the X50 package have any other differences over the regular TT? Is the X50 TT as reliable as the regular TT?
Thanks in advance!

The exhaust, while looking the same externally, is different
X50 intercoolers have extended fin material, internal air volume is the same
Front center under-body duct is different, X50 gets the "shovel type duct"
Ring gear & pinion shaft, transmission, clutch plate, & oil pump all have different part #s for the X50, no idea what the differences are
Engine programming may be different, I don't know...

X50 versus non-X50 differences:
1. An X50 optioned 996 Turbo has more horsepower (~29 hp more) than the non-X50 optioned 996 Turbo.
2. The X50 option cost ~$18k.
3. The X50 k24 turbo has more turbo lag than the k16 turbo.

Thanks for the replies fellas! Are the K24 turbos in the X50 package a better turbo than the normal TT turbos or just larger with more lag? What is the predicted longevity of these turbos (I know that's a tough question)?

K24s are larger, not necessarily better. Definitely more lag. Longevity is the same and directly related to type of use and maintenance.

There is no structural difference between the K16 and K24 turbochargers. Same bearing housings, bearings, thrust washers, backplates, compressor housings, wastegate actuators, heat shield, nuts and bolts. The only thing that is different between the two are>> compressor wheel (larger) turbine wheel diameter larger, and a larger A/R turbine housing.
When you rebuild the K24>>you can use K16 components. For the street you can mix and match parts to me make a K16/24 hybrid. or machine the entire K24 turbine wheel into the small K16 A/R(tighter) turbine housing (nice track combination)..

I suspect you are shopping for a 996tt. As an X50 owner, I would say that the differences between an X50 and a non-X50 car are not that big of a deal. If it's more power you want, that's easy and affordable with a tune and a few modifications. I think the X50 option is over-valued in the marketplace, frankly.

With the possible exception of a very low mile, perfect condition X50 car that might have some future collectible value, there isn't much reason to spend a premium on an X50 car.
There is are far better ways to spend the same extra $ on performance tuning and modern turbo upgrades than paying a big X50 premium.

As another x50 owner, I agree with a cpl people saying they are not really worth the premium (especially the $18k back in the day) with the exception of one upmanship at a car meet up and possible resale to someone vain or uninformed.

Does that premium even exist today? I bought my X50 a few years ago but didn't pay extra for it. Sure, the seller mentioned it, etc. but the price was in line with other Turbos in similar condition.........

Not sure...as a new owner of one...but I have noticed that when these cars sell on BAT...there seems to be a premium on them. Not $18k...but a bit more

It seems on the super low mileage cars there is a premium for X50s and Turbo Ss. As the mileage goes up the premium decreases.
